The Longing Eyes of a Puppy Mill Dachshund

This black and tan smooth Dachshund is one of 90 dogs rescued from an alleged puppy mill in Salem County, New Jersey on Saturday.  The facility was in business for 40 years, and run by 73-year-old Louanne Koval, who was charged with eight counts of animal cruelty, with more charges pending.  Excerpt from the Courier Post Online:

The Humane Society of the United States, the Cumberland County SPCA and the Gloucester County Animal Shelter assisted Saturday in responding to the location and rescuing the dogs. The animals included dachshunds, hairless and powder puff Chinese crested, Yorkshire terriers and some mixed breeds. Many were suffering from severe skin, eye and dental infections, and several were matted with feces, officials said.
The Humane Society oversaw the transport of the dogs to local shelters so they could receive food, medical attention and a clean living environment.

The Cumberland County SPCA, which took in 50 of the dogs, is accepting applications for adoption that will be available on its Web site.  Find out more at the Courier Post Online.
