The focal is a hand crafted purple porcelain dog bone with DOG MOM hand inscribed.  The dog bone is surrounded by a variety of chubby artisan lampwork beads in shades of purple and lavender.  Pale lavender core with purple raised dots, a looping scroll design, and a drum rondelle.

The clasp is a silver heart with paw print lobster claw.  To finish things just right, I added an artisan lampwork heart that is nicely fat and scarlet red.

Dedicated to my Dog Loving Mom

Blackie Duke and Mom 

My love of dogs began in the womb thanks to my mother.  

When I was born, I joined a middle aged furry brother, Blackie Duke, who was a Labrador Retriever.  He was just the first of my furry siblings; I never have had human ones.

My mom was a "crazy dog lady" long before it became "fashionable."  My canine siblings enjoyed birthday parties that rivaled my own.

She was a lifelong supporter of animal welfare and, in fact, all of her dogs were rescues.

Mom passed away suddenly this past Saturday afternoon.  By now she's had many a joyous reunion with all of her dog children and dog grandchildren.

I dedicate the following poem to the memory of my dog loving mom.  Except for the sweet wine - she spent her money on dog treats - she could have written this herself.

When I Am Old 

I shall wear turquoise and soft gray sweatshirts

and a bandana over my silver hair

and I shall spend my Social Security checks on sweet wine and my dogs

and sit in my house on my well-worn chair

and listen to my dogs breathing.

I will sneak out in the middle of a warm summer night

and take my dogs for a run, if my old bones will allow

and when people come to call, I will smile and nod as I show them my dogs

and talk of them and about them.

The Ones so Beloved of the Past and the Ones so Beloved of Today.

I still will work hard cleaning up after them and mopping and feeding them

and whispering their names in a soft, loving way.

I will wear the gleaming sweat on my throat, like a jewel

and I will be an embarrassment to all

and my family, who have not yet found the peace

in being free to have dogs as your Best Friends.

This is the kind of woman I am

Loving dogs is easy, they are a part of me, accept me for who I am.

My dogs appreciate my presence in their lives.

When I am old this will be important to me.

Old Dogs Are the Best Dogs Book Review

Old Dogs:  Are the Best Dogs is, hands down, my favorite dog book.   This is less a book review as it is an opportunity for me to encourage you to consider this one of the best gifts you can give this holiday season.

A collection of short profile vignettes written by Gene Weingarten and photographs by Michael S. Williamson, this book is a tribute to senior dogs. 

The publishers state that anyone who has ever loved an old dog will love Old Dogs.  I beg to differ.  Anyone who has ever love any dog will love this book.

All of the dogs in this book were at least 10 years old when their portraits were made.  Published in 2008, many are now waiting for their human companions at the rainbow bridge.  Weingarten notes:

"If you ask us which of them [the dogs] are still alive, our answer is:  They all are.  May old dogs live forever."

Old Dogs begins with by far the longest essay.   Remembering Harry is a story about Harry, a yellow Labrador Retriever, the product of a Kansas puppy mill.  In telling Harry's story, the author shares observations about living with our best friends and life itself.  

" Old dogs can be cloudy-eyed and grouchy, gray of muzzle, graceless of gait, odd of habit, hard of hearing, pimply, wheezy, lazy and lumpy.  but to anyone who has ever known an old dog, these things are of little consequence.  Old dogs are vulnerable.  They show exorbitant gratitude and limitless trust.  They are without artifice.  They are funny in new and unexpected ways.  But above all, they seem at peace.  This last quality is almost indefinable.  If you want to play it safe, you can call it serenity.  I call it wisdom.."

Without a doubt, I promise you will find dogs in this book who will bring your own old friends to mind.  I suspect you'll fall in love with every dog in this book.  These beautiful black and white portrait photographs of the dogs will melt your heart.  Many of Weingarten's profiles will require tissues.

If you don't have a copy of this book, get one.  If you're a dog lover like me, you'll find yourself picking it up more often than you can imagine.  It is a meditation on the meaning of life with dogs and on love.

As a dog lover, in Weingarten you'll a kindred spirit.  This is a man who has instructed his family that he wishes to be buried in Washington's Congressional Cemetery, because it allows dogs to run free.  He wants his tombstone to read only:  

"Gene Weingarten, a funny man who loved dogs."  

and to be carved in the shape of a fire hydrant.
