Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Charlie!

Deep Thoughts

Thanks so much to Stephanie Rand for writing in with the tale of her beloved handsome 'Charlie.'  Boy was he lucky to find such a wonderful home with his new human.  She writes:

Dear Joey and Rowdy,

First welcome Rowdy! You're adorable and I look forward to getting to
meet you and see you grow-up with your new pal Joey.
I have been reading your blog on a daily basis since adopting Charlie,
my older rescue Dachshund, on December 4th of last year.
I was thinking of adopting a dog for about a year prior to finding
Charlie - I did my research and found him on Petfinder. A lady - who
usually rescues cats - was forwarded an email saying Charlie was going
to be euthanized by the end of the day. She rescued him immediately
and then, after making sure he was socially adjusted, put a listing
for him on Petfinder. I was the first person to reply to her ad and I
met him a day later and then he moved into my home.

When Charlie first entered my apartment - after sniffing out the place
- he stood in the middle of the kitchen and peed while smiling and
looking right at me. It was as if he claimed territory to my apartment
- I loved his spark of personality from the start. I had been living
alone for about a year after a long-term relationship break-up. I
can't begin to express how much laughter and fun the little guy has
brought into my life on a daily basis. I like to take him to work from
time to time, we've gone to both Dachshund gatherings at Washington
Square Park and he has made some new friends on my block as well.

This summer my apartment was broken into and Charlie happened to be
home at the time. He wasn't hurt but he has stepped up his growling
and barking when he hears any noises in the hallway to make sure we
both remain safe. He has also become an extended member of my family -
this summer I took him up to Vermont to spend a week in a cabin on a
lake with my Dad and sister. He went in the lake for a swim and really
enjoyed all the new sniffs and life in the woods. He loves to visit my
Dad's house and run around the yard and take naps with his granddogdad
on the couch.

Who's a Good Boy?

Feeling Rowdy

Apparently your new co-host at The Long and Short of it All isn't the only one who's feeling a bit disorderly and a little boisterous.  Meet Rowdy!   Thanks so much to his human, Kris Wilson, for writing in:

Dear Joey and Rowdy,

I've been reading your delightful blog since shortly after our dachshund joined the family, about a year and a half ago.  I was so sad to hear of Maggie's passing and so glad to hear about your rescue Rowdy.  I love the name as you can tell from this guy -- this is our own sweet Rowdy taken when he was about 6 months, one of my favorite pictures.  He looks all black but in the sunlight you can see he is a very dark chocolate.  He is an absolute delight to our family.

An Indian woman at Dad's place of work said of the name 'Rowdy':  Rowdy is a very good name, something different. Indian language the meaning of ‘Rowdy’ is "courageous unprecedented king."

Wirehair Wednesday: Can I Stay Pleeeease?

Boy is this holiday week whizzing by - can you believe it's Wednesday already?  Wirehair Wednesday?!  Thanks so much to Sue Fell for writing in all the way from the UK with an awesome pic of her boy 'Pepsi.'  She writes:

Hi Maggie and Joey

I still love reading your blog, it's great to have a place to go to read all about Dachshunds with others who love them as much as me! I thought I would share this photo of Pepsi. I went into my bedroom the other night and saw a small lump wriggling up under the bedspread from the bottom to the top and out popped Pepsi's head! I had to grab my phone and take a photo as he looked so cute with that sweet "can I stay?" look on his face. He definitely has me wrapped round his little paw .

See more photos of this handsome guy in the archives.

Wirehair Wednesday: Welcome To Your Forever Home Posey!

Wirehair Dachshund Relaxation

What day is it?  Wednesday!  What's that mean?  It's Wirehair Wednesday!  Thanks so much to Jessica C. for writing in with the story of her new beautiful rescue gal 'Posey.'  She writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

Remember Charlie Watson? We just adopted a little sister for him from Southern California Dachshund Rescue. We named her Posey. Here is a picture of them together. She is about 5 years old and was found wandering the streets of San Diego barely able to walk. Luckily, the shelter and SCDR recognized her symptoms and started treating her for IVDD. She has been with us for about a week and is already walking much better. She gets stronger every day. As you can see, she is a mini wire-haired dachshund that looks just like her big brother Charlie. As she gets stronger, she also gets more and more feisty--she wants to wrestle Charlie every chance she gets. We hope we are able to provide her a happy home and that she lives a long healthy life with us here in San Francisco!

We're betting that little Posey could not have found a better home.  Congrats all around!

Leaping Into Your Friday With Some Ooey Gooey Dachshund Puppy Goodness: Meet JIMMY DEAN!

Wow!  Thanks so much to Lauren Miller, who hails near Santa Monica, California for sending in such sweet photos of her handsome little boy 'Jimmy Dean.'  She writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

My name is Lauren, and I read your blog everyday! This is our little son JIMMY DEAN, and he is a silver dapple mini Dachshund .He is from southern CA and this was his first day ever at the beach, he LOVED it!!! He was only about 6 months here and now he is 11 months.

We just have one question:  Was this little tyke named after the actor or the sausage?

Wirehair Wednesday: Meet Caron!

Guten Tag!  It's Wednesday, and you're tuned in to www.DachshundLove.blogspot.com on your internet dial, and that can mean only one thing:  It's Wirehair Wednesday!  Thanks so much to Charity S. for sending in such sweet photos of her new furry friend, 'Caron!'  She writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

This is Caron.  He is an eleven-week-old chocolate and tan wire-hair puppy. He loves his "Long and Short of it All" reading already!  He lives with his brother, fellow Dachshund Amos who is 1-year-old.

Oh I Wish I Were An Oscar Mayer Wiener

That is what I'd truly like to be!

Don't worry little 'Albert,' we're quite sure that everyone is already in love with you!  Thanks to Albert's mom for writing in:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

I own a 5 year old mini dachshund and review your blog daily with him. His name is Albert and we are from London, Ontario Canada. Every year Albert and I attend Wienerfest which is hosted just outside of London in Thamesford.  Last year Albert was thrilled to get his photo taken in the Wienermobile and when we saw the posting about the 75th birthday of the wienermobile we had to share his photo!

Thanks for all the interesting articles and the updates on Joey and Maggie!

How I Became A Doxieholic: Meet Hatcher and Hamilton!

Who's Handsome?  Hatcher....

....and Hamilton!

We can't thank Kristi Jeter, who hails from Dallas, Texas enough for sending in such beautiful photos of her beloved black and tan longhair boys (and their Chihuahua brother!).  And the story of this Dachshund family is just so heartwarming that it really needs no introduction; just grab a Doxie, put him on your lap, and enjoy!

Dear Joey and Maggie,

After the death of my beloved yorkie, I began to contemplate what breed of dog I would like to bring into my home to be a friend to my Chihuahua, Julius. I looked on Petfinder.com almost daily at all of the small dogs, but still couldn’t decide. Then one day a friend brought over his two dachshunds, both black and tan, one smooth coat and one long haired. They were so adorable and so loving, and I was immediately smitten. The next day I began searching Petfinder for the perfect dachshund boy. I very quickly located a long haired black and tan that was being fostered by a rescue group near my home. A few long phone conversations with his foster mom, and he was ours. My daughter and I picked him up and brought him home to his new daddy, my husband Mark. Mark had never owned his “own” dog. All previous pets had been mine, our daughter’s or my son’s. Mark had the task of giving this new boy his new name and chose “Hatcher” after his favorite hockey player, Darian Hatcher. Darian is known as a bit of a fighter in the hockey world, and so does our Hatcher have his feisty side. I never knew my husband had the capacity to love a dog so much. I jealously watched them snuggle on the couch together watching sports, and anytime I couldn’t find Hatcher, there he was at his daddy’s side. Even though I love our Chihuahua, I wanted a dachshund of my own, too. And thus began the search…

Months and months of searching Petfinder resulted in nothing but frustration. I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for, but knew that I would know him when I saw him. I looked all over Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma to no avail. I definitely wanted to rescue a dachshund, rather than purchase from a breeder. After returning from a vacation in Savannah, I had an idea. I loved visiting Georgia and sure wouldn’t mind a trip back. Could it be that my boy was waiting for me there?

More searching of Petfinder ensued, this time focusing on the Atlanta area where I have family. That was how I found DREAM Dachshund Rescue, and the little boy that is now the love of my life. Once I clicked on that little thumbnail photo of the boy they called Samson, it was love at first sight. When I read his story and found out he had been rescued from an abusive situation, I knew that I had to make it my mission to make sure the rest of his life was spent being spoiled and pampered.

I quickly emailed the folks at DREAM, and just as quickly had my hopes dashed. They were leery about accommodating an adoption so far away. What if it didn’t work out, they wanted to know. Not work out? There is no such thing with me, I assured them. A letter writing campaign from friends and family and many, many phone calls from me finally convinced them to let me come meet Samson. I happily made the drive from Dallas to Atlanta (13 hours each way) sure that they would let me bring him home.

When we arrived at the foster mom’s home, I was reassured again that I had made the right choice. Samson, having had a pretty hard life up to now, was afraid of strangers. It took some patience, but he finally allowed me to hold him. By that night, he was snuggling with me and giving me kisses. I chose the name Hamilton for him. Like Hatcher, he is named after a beloved sports figure – my favorite Texas Ranger baseball player, Josh Hamilton. Josh had overcome some serious drug and alcohol abuse issues to become major league baseball’s MVP. I knew that Hamilton would be my own MVP… Most Valuable Pup!

And, oh how he and Hatcher get along! My goodness, you would swear those two are brothers. From the very beginning, they romped and played and wrestled. They have several of these sessions daily, and it’s always so fun to watch. I know that Hamilton feels loved and safe, but there is no way he can know what he has done for me. I go to sleep each night like salami in a dachshund sandwich; Hamilton on my left and Hatcher on my right, between his beloved daddy and me. Julius the Chihuahua rounds out the group at my knees, under the covers just like his doxie brothers. It’s so funny how much Julius has taken on the dachshund personality. I’m certain that he is happy that I brought his two brothers home.

So that is the story of how I became a Doxieholic. I will never again be without at least two Doxies. My husband and I will travel to Georgia later this year for DREAM Rescue’s Halloweenie event. Who knows? Maybe we'll find a third dachshund to bring home!

Wirehair Wednesday: Meet Ardie!

Just look at those eyebrows!

It's Wednesday....and that can mean only one thing:  It's Wirehair Wednesday, a day dedicated to our elusive wirehair friends!  And boy have we got a bundle of handsome for you today:  It's 'Ardie!'  Thanks so much to Ardie's mom, Rose Russo, for sending in such nice pics.  She writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

I love your blog, and I've been following your healthcare issues with concern, I'm so happy to read you are both happy and healthy!!
I am owned by three Dachshunds: Tessa, a 15-yr-old smooth wildboar, Ted is a 10-yr-old smooth B & T dapple, and Ardbeg "Ardie" who is an 8-mo-old wirehair B & T.
These are photos of our little comedian Ardie; maybe someday he'll make it into Wirehair Wednesday! One of these pics was taken the first day he came home with us, he was 8 weeks old and merely 3.3 pounds. He even allows me to try my knitting projects on him! He is a Dachsie through and through, as he is happiest in a cuddly weenie pile with with weenie family.  :)

All the best.

We'd be happy to cuddle up with this good-looking trio as well!

Hot Fun in the Summertime with Turbo and Lily

As summertime draws near (yes it is coming!), we paws to reflect on that day when the humans toil to get the swimming pool ready for the season.  Thanks to our lucky pals, handsome 'Turbo,' and beautiful 'Lily,' who hail from suburban Chicago, Illinois, for telling their side of the story:

Dearest Maggie & Joey....

The short 90-day window we like to call 'summer' brings some very peculiar rituals to the humans in our household. For instance; they repeatedly burn perfectly good meat in a shiny silver box in the backyard till it resembles charcoal briquettes. Then they water the grass on purpose so it grows and they have to cut it more often. None of this makes any sense to us.
But the biggest ritual has to be opening the giant bathtub which takes up 90% of OUR backyard. When the cover goes away, we no longer get to bound across it after real (or imagined) intruders on the other side of the fence. And we lose the luxury of drinking the tepid, thick, brown water which accumulates in the low spots when it rains. But we both have different perspectives on this day of mystery....

Turboism:   Every team needs a leader and that's where I come in! What can I say, I've got a bad back and a bum hip. Have had since '04. I tried to get disability and the lady at SSI told me I was barking up the wrong tree.

So Turbo will sit here on my perch, high above the hard hat area, and watch the humans toil. I don't aspire to be an agility dog or wiener race champion. I'm just Turbo from the hood...and life is good.

Lily the Lunatic Laborer: Get me some backup, before I blow a gasket... My ball keeps getting stuck in the skimmer basket!
And as soon as the humans get it out of the basket, a force greater than myself, compels me to put it RIGHT BACK IN!
In between these steps I have to bark at it of course. (Dr. Drew, where are you when I need you?)  How can the humans even THINK about opening the pool when there's a ball crises in our own backyard? Seems I'm always the one 'sticking my neck out' around here. Once we fill this tub up I'll send you a video of my own maniacal version of "Marco Polo". (Here's a hint: it involves a ball!)

Till then............may the pupsicle always fall your way,
From Turbo & Lily............wishing you lazy, summer dog-days!

Dachshund Relaxation: Geneva's 15th Birthday!

Thanks so much to our beautiful pal 'Geneva,' who hails from Snug Harbor, Rhode Island, for sending in such a great photo from her special day.  You may remember that Geneva has a thing for really big trucks and heavy equipment!  She writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

While you're on an outdoorsy kick, I thought I'd send you a photo Mom took of me when we visited the beach at Chatham on Cape Cod recently. I had just celebrated my 15th birthday, and I got to go on a fabulous day trip and get sand stuck to my nose. As you can see, I was all smiles!

As you should be Geneva!  Happy 15th Birthday!

Patti Page would've surely fallen in love with Geneva. Put a Dachshund in your lap and turn up the volume.

A Dachshund Family Update: Meet Deacon!

Deacon

Back in April of 2010, we helped celebrate a special Dachshund's first birthday.  His name was 'Samson,' and his mom, S. Kate Fletcher, had sent us in some of the most stunning Dachshund photos we had ever seen.  We were devastated to find out that Samson left this planet just a few months later.
But it's a new year, and we couldn't be happier to report that a new Dachshund is with the family now, and boy is he a looker!  It's 'Deacon!'  His mom writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

June 5th, 2011 will be difficult. A year ago on that day, as you previously reported, I lost my dear Samson in a terrible accident. He was only a year old, but was oh-so-smart! He was only one test away from obtaining his therapy dog certification and I mourned his lost, not only for myself, but for all the children who would miss out on time with such a special fella. As the one year mark of Samson's absence from my life approaches, I find cause to celebrate.
Recently, a new little doxie has placed his tiny paws on my heart. Meet Deacon-- a chocolate and tan, patchwork dapple dachshund! Like his brother before him, Deacon is destined for therapy work at Arkansas Children's Hospital.
This is a message of hope for everyone out there who has ever lost their best, little, Dachshund friend. I may never have my Sam again, but I do get the honor of loving Deacon now. It is like comparing apples to oranges-- but lucky for me, I love all kinds of fruit!

Samson

Samson may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
You've got big paws to fill, Deacon, but we're sure you'll brighten hundreds of children's lives.  Go Deacon!

The Wonderful World Of Smiling Dachshunds!

Great Grin Jasper!

Thanks so much to our readers for sending in some awfully cute photos of your smiling little selves.  Sure puts a smile on our little mugs to see such happy Dachshunds!  'Jasper' and his mom Amy Francisco from Louisville, Kentucky write:

Dear Joey & Maggie,

Hi, my name is Jasper. I am a 2 year old Dachshund, and my mom and I love your blog. When we get online, it's one of the first things we go to. We watched the "Dachumercial" and while we agreed with a lot of what was said, we were surprised when she said that Dachshunds don't smile... of course we do!! I smile all the time, I'm a happy dog!! Mom even managed to get this picture of me smiling after playing one day.

Let's see those pearly whites Harley and Cash!

I also have two doxie cousins (Harley and Cash) that mom took a picture of once and they are totally smiling in it!! We doxies are awesome dogs!!

The world always looks brighter from behind a smile like Duncan's!

'Duncan' and 'Sophie' also write in with photos of their happy little selves:

Dear Maggie & Joey,

We just love your blog, especially when you post videos of other doxies - we love new friends in that strange machine that Mom always plays with! Anyway, we saw the Dachumerical and we disagree that Dachshunds don't smile just like adorable Ringo that we saw on your blog today. We may not be purebred doxies but here is more proof that Dachshunds do smile!

Sophie's smile is as sweet as sugar.

Dachshund Love Stories: Caitlin And Her Pal Cassie

Thanks so much to Caitlin M. for sending in such a great tale of her beloved black and tan smooth 'Cassie.'  And the retro photo is just perfect.  Tears us up a bit.....thinking about how special all the Dachshunds in our lives have been.  Without any further ado:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

I love the blog! I read it every day. It’s my little piece of Dachshund Love every day. It’s been 3 years since I’ve had a dachshund, my lovely little lady Cassie, a black and tan mini. She was a companion since I can remember. My parents got her when I was 3 and we were basically inseparable since then. My bed mate, toy, even sometimes my furry hot water bottle. (I don’t know if most people do this, but nothing made me feel better than her cuddling with me when I was sick).
She passed away spring my senior year of high school at the age of 16. I like to think she knew I’d be OK away at college and she could go. She was sweet but tough as nails. She was about 4 years old when we introduced a Siberian Husky into our home and by the time she passed, we had 3 Australian Shepherds so she had to play tough with the big dogs. They knew not to get in her face and to step back when she came through. The puppy thought she was a chew toy but found out quickly she wasn’t!
I love reading your blog every day because of my situation currently away at school, sadly I cannot have a Dachshund.  :(   But it’s a great daily reminder of those joyous little dogs in our lives; past, present and future. I’m constantly begging my parents to get another Dachshund so I can still visit and play.
Also I thought I was the only one with a crazy doxie collection! If I see something with a doxie on it or a figurine, I have to buy it. And now I know where to find more!
Again thank you for this wonderful blog! I am in love with it. I laugh, cry, aww at all the stories, and envy your beautiful dogs!

P.S.  I think I was about 5 and Cassie was about 3 in the photo.

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Nikita!

Thanks to Rosa Gans, who hails all the way from Porto Alegre, Brazil for sending in such a nice photo of her sweet chocolate 'Nikita!'  Rosa writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

I don´t speak English, sorry. This is my special Dachshund, Nikita, she´s 12 years old, with the white "hair" . I love her so much, I love all the Dachshunds. Your blog is great!!!!!!

Wirehair Wednesday: Meet Gustaf!

What beautiful photos of an extremely handsome wirehair boy!  Meet 'Gustaf,' who hails from Fall Creek, Oregon.  His human, Tamara Kabush writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

Love your site, love your doxies! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
I check in every morning to savor all the Dachshund photos and stories. What a great way to start the day!!!!!!! Thank you!
In honor of Wirehair Wednesday, I'm including a couple photos of Gustaf, my 11 year old Wheaten Wirehair. He is my best buddy, soul mate and the love of my life.

Someone doesn't want to get out of bed.

Gustaf sure looks great for an 11-year-old guy!

Wirehair Wednesday: Meet Bóris and Yara!

"Badgers? We don't need no stinking badgers."

Thanks so much to Ricardo Mineiro for writing in all the way from Portugal with a great little photo of his beautiful beloved gals.  He writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

This is the first time I´m submitting something to your blog, although I tend to check up on it on a regular basis...Great work!
I only wanted to send you this picture we took today of our two wirehairs (Bóris and Yara) mother and daughter, 4 and 2 years old...
They look soooo cute in those sheriff outfits... Hope you like them too!

Best regards.

Those Special Dachshunds: Meet Maci, Oscar, and Dixie!

Relaxing with 'Maci,' 'Oscar,' and 'Dixie'

Thanks so much to Andy B. for sending in such nice photos of his beautiful smooth pack!  He writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

We have three dachshunds that are suffering through a brutal winter here in Albany, NY.  They still manage to get a walk in just about every day but are looking forward to some warm, sunny weather.  They've quickly learned that hardly anything beats a nice warm fire.
We got Oscar (red) and Dixie (black and tan dapple) from a shelter when they were 4 and 6 (not sure which one was older since the paperwork was inconsistent).  We originally were thinking about just getting a single Dachshund since that would be our first dog, but they were so good together that we didn't have the heart to split them apart.  We've had them 4 years now and they're still full of energy.  We got Maci (chocolate and tan) right before Thanksgiving 2010 and since she's about a year old, she has boundless energy.  Luckily Oscar likes the attention and manages to take a bunch of energy out of her during play time.  Dixie still isn't completely convinced that we need another female Dachshund in the house, but manages to tolerate Maci's energy and every once in a while joins in the playing.

Hey Mom and Dad - put another log on the fire!

Happy 10th Birthday Phoebe!

May bones rain from the sky!  Thanks so much to this cute little black and tan gal for writing in about her special day:

Hello Joey and Maggie!

Just wanted to share my birthday picture with you--I turned 10 on February 13 and with all the excitement of Valentines Day and the Westminster Kennel Club Show, this is the first opportunity I could get to send you a photo. We had a great party Sunday evening with a couple of special guests, dachshund birthday cards, presents (lots of new plush toys to chase and squeak!) and a special birthday dinner of raw carrots and stew meat-Woof! Glad to see you are both doing well--hopefully the snow is melting and spring will come for you soon!

Love,

Here's to many more Phoebe!

Those Special Dachshunds in Heaven: Sally

Thanks so much to Jim Eicher for sending in such funny and heartwarming photos of his beautiful beloved 'Sally,' who waits for him and his family at the Rainbow Bridge.  Our hearts go out to you.  Jim writes:

Hi there Joey and Maggie,

My wife and I have been reading your excellent blog for some time now. We had a beautiful 13-year-old red Dachshund (Sally) until last October when we had to put her down. My wife had her when we met eight years ago, and being a weimaraner guy, I didn't expect to get SO attached to her. Funny how that happens. Even though we still have two weimaraners, our house feels so empty without Sally in it. It's interesting how such a little dog can have such a large presence.

We hope to get another Doxie in time; it's just too early right now.

Thanks for your great blog, and all the best to you.

Sally = Happiness
