Inspiration On Wheels
Via CBS out of Dallas-Fort Worth: They are inspiration on wheels. Two handicapped recruits to a Dallas rehabilitation program are providing the kind of hope and encouragement nobody else can. They do that without saying a single word.

Fond Remembrances: The Wiener Wagon for Maggie and Joey
Sometimes we're a bit taken back by the kindness of people. Take for example this awesome "Wiener Wagon." We got a note in January from a reader of the blog, Grace Liesa, who asked us for our address and said she had something special to send us. And boy, did she! It was Maggie and Joey's very own Wiener Wagon! Grace hand-crafted and sent this to us solely out of the kindness of her heart, in honor of Joey making it through his surgery last year, and Maggie and Joey's birthday, which was last December 23rd. We tried to get photos of Maggie and Joey beside it to post on the blog, but we could never get a good photo of both of them that also detailed this wonderful sculpture. As time moves along so quickly, we never got the chance to post it to the blog, even after several more photo session attempts with Maggie and Joey.
We would like to rectify that situation, as something so special, especially after Maggie's passing, must be shared with everyone. It means more now than it ever did, and will be something we will treasure for the rest of our lives. Thank you so much Grace.
Grace noted to us: I know you all had a rough one in 2010 (I realize that was an understatement), so I hope this cheery sculpture will bring smile to your face. May Joey and Maggie have a much smoother ride in their Wiener Wagon in 2011. Take care, and send our doxie kisses to Joey and Maggie, and tell them although we've never met in person, we surely love them in our hearts, and think loving thoughts of them all the time. That was how this special sculpture was created.

Dachshund Lover Punches Bear To Save Her Dog!
Brook Collins holds her dog, Fudge, at her home on Tuesday. Collins punched a black bear in the snout after the bear attacked Fudge on Sunday.
What are those words in the AKC Dachshund Breed Standard - courageous to the point of rashness - yes, that's it. Apparently those words not only apply to Dachshunds, but Dachshund Lovers as well! Meet 22-year-old Brooke Collins and her beloved red smooth 'Fudge,' who hail from Juneau, Alaska. Miss Collins let Fudge outside to do his business about 7:30 PM on Sunday night and he started barking immediately - “the most horrible sound in the world” said Miss Collins. Excerpt from the Juneau Empire:
Collins said when she looked outside she saw a bear was crouching down with Fudge its paws and was biting the back of the dog’s neck.
“That bear was carrying her like a salmon,” she said.
She said she almost instinctively went up and did the first thing she thought of. She punched the bear’s face and scooped away her dog when it let go.
It all happened too fast to really think about but she had flashes of hearing about how some animals will back off from a punch to the nose, she said.
“It was a stupid thing but I couldn’t help it,” she said. “I know you’re not supposed to do that but I didn’t want my dog to be killed.”
Fudge suffered some claw and bite marks which weren't deep and required no medical attention, but he will be taken in to the vet if they become infected. Read more at the Juneau Empire.

Greece is the word, and little 'Spithas' is the man! Awesome new video by youtuber ssggrock who notes: Spithas, the little Dachshund from Greece, is on vacation! After he wakes up he goes for a swim at the sea. Then he shows how smart he is by performing some funny tricks. Finally, after having a long trip with his boat Spithas goes to bed.
Welcome Home Oscar!
Thanks to an anonymous commenter for letting us know that 11-year-old 'Oscar' has been returned to his home. He was the poor little Parma Heights, Ohio guy who went missing, and a man said that he gave him away at a garage sale! Excerpt from Cleveland.com:
Within hours of the posting of the story of Brian Tabar losing "Oscar" the Dachshund in his Old Brooklyn neighborhood Aug. 6, the couple who "adopted" him at a yard sale in Parma Heights returned him to his rightful owner.
"The article worked," Tabar said. "A friend of the couple who adopted him read the article, got in touch with them and they dropped Oscar off at my house around 9:30 p.m. (Thursday, Aug. 18).
"Thank God this story was true and had a happy ending. My daughter could not stop smiling with joy when I carried Oscar into the house."

Dachshund racing returned to Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, California on Saturday, August 20th, and 'Mitzi' didn't fare so well this time. By youtuber masterofhounds who states: Mitzi's racing career is littered with gold metals. On this day Mitzi was favored to win but ended up not placing. We caught up with Mitzi's trainer to find out what happened.
Dachshund Travels Over 4,000 Miles With 'Wagon Man'
What can we say really - getting to travel all day with your Dad, meeting new people, smelling new smells - sounds like heaven. Meet 'Wagon Man' James Newton, his half-Belgian horse named 'Friday,' and his red smooth Dachshund named 'Buster Brown.' They have traveled over 4,000 miles since February of 2009, starting off in Corpus Christi, Texas, and heading to Alabama. They recently stopped in Cleveland Georgia where the Gainesville Times caught up with them:
"I've been traveling for over 4,000 miles in nine states since February, 2009," he said. "I love to travel. I'm going slow and taking time to look at the countryside. I didn't have too many relatives to hold me back."
Newton said he averages about 15 miles each day on the road.
"You only get one chance to live and will be here on this earth for a short time so you had better enjoy life all you can," he said.
He said while touring America in his wagon, he stops to read historical markers along the way.
"I'm just living my dream," Newton said with a smile.
That is apparent. Those words are written more than once on his home on wheels.

Dachshund Found Under Rubble Week and a Half After Tornado in Joplin, Missouri
Feel good? It's Friday, and boy oh boy have we got a feel-good story for you. A week and a half after the deadly twister descended on Joplin, Missouri, a Dachshund has been found under the rubble of a 5-plex. The red longhair checked out to be healthy at the Humane Society, and is currently in the caring hands of the ASPCA, waiting to reunite with his/her humans. Le'ts hope it's soon. Via KOAM-TV.
Happy 18th Birthday Toby!
May bones rain from the sky for handsome red smooth 'Toby,' who hails from Vancouver, Canada. Toby turned 18-years-old on May 23rd. Toby's thoughts on life: "Yes, sometimes life can be very tough. But I'll tell you what: doesn't matter if you have too short legs or too long nose. If somebody loves you, you are the winner . . . (I said winner, not wiener) dog!"

Police Buy Dachshund Puppy For Canadian Girl Scammed On Internet
What a nice gesture by the Hamilton Police Service Division Three, out of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Laura Gallego Roldan had sent off her money to the scammers, and of course the puppy never arrived. Excerpt from The Toronto Sun:
Laura Gallego Roldan thought her dreams of having a puppy of her own had been crushed — until some Hamilton Police officers stepped up and bought her one.
Ten-year-old Laura found a little Dachshund on a well-known Internet classified site and convinced her parents to pay for the puppy which was supposed to be coming from eastern Canada.
The financial transaction took place but no puppy was ever delivered — leaving the family without money to buy another dog.
“I was really sad when the other puppy didn’t come but now I feel great because it is nice to be helped,” Laura said. “That was important to the police so I wrote them a letter to thank them.” Laura and her dog, Marla Maples, visited the police station Wednesday to say thanks in person.
“I like taking her for walks and I am just really happy,” she said.
Laura’s family reported the scam to police on May 6 and word spread quickly about the heart-broken girl and that is when officers at Hamilton Police’s Division Three uniform patrol took action.
Staff Sgt. Glenn Bullock called the SPCA to find out how much it would cost the get Laura another Dachshund.
“The officers reached into their pockets,” Bullock said. “We try to do good things and help out when we can in cases like this where this little girl and her family get scammed.”
The officers raised enough money to buy a puppy, give it the necessary shots and make a donation to the SPCA.
Way to go.

A Dachshund Family Update: Meet Deacon!

Back in April of 2010, we helped celebrate a special Dachshund's first birthday. His name was 'Samson,' and his mom, S. Kate Fletcher, had sent us in some of the most stunning Dachshund photos we had ever seen. We were devastated to find out that Samson left this planet just a few months later.
But it's a new year, and we couldn't be happier to report that a new Dachshund is with the family now, and boy is he a looker! It's 'Deacon!' His mom writes:
Dear Joey and Maggie,
June 5th, 2011 will be difficult. A year ago on that day, as you previously reported, I lost my dear Samson in a terrible accident. He was only a year old, but was oh-so-smart! He was only one test away from obtaining his therapy dog certification and I mourned his lost, not only for myself, but for all the children who would miss out on time with such a special fella. As the one year mark of Samson's absence from my life approaches, I find cause to celebrate.
Recently, a new little doxie has placed his tiny paws on my heart. Meet Deacon-- a chocolate and tan, patchwork dapple dachshund! Like his brother before him, Deacon is destined for therapy work at Arkansas Children's Hospital.
This is a message of hope for everyone out there who has ever lost their best, little, Dachshund friend. I may never have my Sam again, but I do get the honor of loving Deacon now. It is like comparing apples to oranges-- but lucky for me, I love all kinds of fruit!

Ringo Says: Yes, Dachshunds Do Smile!

Thanks so much to our friends Debi, Ellen, and handsome happy 'Ringo' for writing in to clear up some misinformation in the latest Dachumercial video by Dogster's Julia Szabo (in the post immediately below this). They write:
Dear Joey and Maggie,
We are long-time readers of your blog - first thing in the morning we get up, have breakfast, and then get online to check out all the doxie news! This morning we watched the "Dachumercial: Understanding Dog Breeds: Dachshund" video, and felt we had to write to you. The woman in the video said that Dachshunds do not smile. That is so untrue! To prove it, I am forwarding a few recent pictures of Ringo smiling. Now, Ringo won't smile at everyone, he's a bit reserved around strangers, but with family he is so very loving! And our last Dachshund, Vladimir, used to smile with all his teeth showing! It's obvious to us that this woman has never been owned by a Dachshund, otherwise she would know better... You can't have a sweeter, more loyal dog than a Dachshund.
God bless you all, and thanks for giving us smiles every day!

It's been a while since there has been a new Dachumercial making the rounds, but Dogster's Julia Szabo has put together this nice "how to understand the dog breed Dachshund" refresher. This of course begs the question: will we ever really understand the Dachshund?
Wine Country Wiener Fest

The season sure is heating up for Dachshund events. The Temecula Valley Dachshund Club held its second annual Wine Country Wiener Fest on Sunday at Longshadow Ranch in Temecula, California. The event included family-friendly games, local vendors, raffles, silent auctions, wine tasting, and "Dexter's Derby" Dachshund Races w/Kentucky Derby-style Extravagant Hat Contest. There were prizes for contests that included the longest dachshund, which came in at 42" and the best kisser, canine, of course.
Riverside's Sunny Oasis Dachshund Rescue and Friends brought six rescued dachshunds, all of which found new homes. In addition the TVDC named Sunny Oasis as a recipient of the fundraiser proceeds as well as Almost Home Dachshund Rescue.
Swift running doxies competed in several heats and categories, including puppies and mixed breed dogs.

Meet Sam the Service Dog!
Golden Retrievers step aside, there's a new service dog in town, and his name is 'Sam,' a 4-year-old black and tan dappled smooth Dachshund who "enjoys tearing the stuffing out of toy animals in his free time." Sam assists his human Amber Cornford, who attends Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois where she is majoring in Nursing. Amber suffers from chronic pain caused by Ollier’s disease, a bone disorder resulting in tumors in the joints. Excerpt from the Loyola Phoenix:
Amber was diagnosed with the disease before her first birthday, and since then, she has undergone six limb-lengthening procedures to help her condition.
When Amber experiences pain, she pets Sam to distract herself. At night when her arthritic hand aches, she often rests it on Sam’s chest, and his body heat relieves the pain.
“Instead of taking a lot of drugs that hurt my body, [having a service dog] is a treatment that is less harmful to my body and, in the long term, [it] has less side effects,” said the 22-year-old junior.
While she doesn’t like to think of herself as disabled, Amber said she realizes that her condition limits her physical abilities. She often needs to ask for a seat on the shuttle and public transportation because it is difficult, for her to stand for long periods of time.
Sometimes even walking can be painful, so Sam tags along anywhere and everywhere she goes. From the classroom to the IC, he’s there to assist.
“It’s not a convenience thing,” she said. “It’s what he’s for. You can’t choose when you’re going to have pain.”

Japanese Rescue Dachshund Finds New Home in Canada
Meet PETA animal rescuer Ashley Fruno and pretty red longhair 'Belle,' a Dachshund who was apparently left abandoned in Niigata, south of Sendai — the area affected worst by the March earthquake and tsunami. Belle will have a wonderful new home with Ms. Fruno's parents, who reside in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Excerpt from Canada.com:
A B.C. couple is adopting Belle, a red-haired dachshund that was abandoned after the massive earthquake and tsunami that rocked Japan last month.
The dog — who is believed to be four or five years old and in good health — was left with an animal shelter in Niigata, when her guardian fled the country because of radiation concerns.
PETA animal rescuer Ashley Fruno, who worked with the shelter immediately after the earthquake, heard about the dog's plight and contacted her parents, Karin and Brian Fruno, in Surrey.
The couple were eager to adopt the dog, and Ashley Fruno set off on a 23-hour journey.
"(Belle is a) sort of a doggie ambassador," said Ashley. "She's the lucky one compared to all the other ones who weren't so lucky."
As was the case along the Gulf Coast of the U.S. following Hurricane Katrina, many evacuation centres in Japan barred companion animals, so residents were forced to choose seeking safety over saving their pets. Japanese shelters are now filled with thousands of animals in need of safe homes, she said.

Belle is radiation-free, Fruno assured.
“She was actually screened by Japan animal quarantine when she was exported from Japan.
“Then she was screened again when we got to Seattle, then again coming into Canada,” she said.

DACHSHUND: Perplexing Spelling Bee Students All Around The World
She misspelt our favorite word, but congrats goes out to first-time contender Hanuushah Vizabaskaran for taking the crown at the Selangor RHB-New Straits Times National Spell-It-Right (SIR) Challenge in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, on Saturday. Excerpt from the New Straits Times:
Hanuushah sailed through words like "brittle" and "atrocious" but tripped up on "dachshund".
However, the top title was hers after she got "inimical" right and her opponent, Khadeejah Abdul Halim, misspelt "drollery" in a tiebreaker.
"I am surprised that I got so far. I didn't expect to reach the finals at all," said Hanuushah, who vowed to step up on her reading for the National Challenge on July 16 in Kuala Lumpur, where she will represent her state.
She walked away with RM2,000 and a plaque after spelling correctly four out of five words at the finals.
