Please Welcome Your New 'Long and Short of it All' Co-Host!
Who, Me?
We're pleased to announce that the exhaustive search for your new 'Long and Short of it All' co-host is now over. Ladies and Gentlemen, please put your hands together and give a warm welcome to.....black and tan wirehaired 'Rowdy!' Yep, things are about to get a lot more "wirey" around here! And the search wasn't really that exhaustive - we weren't looking for a new Dachshund, but Hot Toddy (his foster name), appeared on our MidWest Dachshund Rescue facebook feed, and we immediately fell in love with his soulful little eyes. We can't thank MidWest Dachshund Rescue enough for all that they have done to bring some joy back in our lives after the loss of our beloved 'Maggie.'
Rowdy was born on May 2nd, so he is just over five months old. At the vets yesterday, he weighed in at 9.4 pounds, and the vet thinks that he will be about 16 pounds when fully grown. Rowdy came in through MWDR with 10 other puppies as a result of a few puppy mill/large breeding facilities which closed down in Missouri. He has been fostered for several weeks by a fantastic family near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Joey and Dad went to visit him a few weeks ago to see if he was a good match for us, and Joey took to him right away - they played some, and when Joey had enough, he let out a little growl, and Rowdy respected him and went and played with his toys. So, Joey does like to play some, and he will also teach Rowdy how to be a great dog.
He is doing well in his new home. Potty training is a work in progress, obviously, for a young pup whose world has just been turned upside down. But in almost 3 days, he has had just one accident in the house. He is distracted by the city noises when we go outside to take care of business, although he is less and less distracted as each day passes. He loves to play, he loves his toys, he loves to snuggle, and like any Dachshund, boy does he love his food! We're slowly switching him over to raw food, which he loves. He hasn't had any diarrhea or stomach upset, so the transition is going well. He is fascinated when Dad is in the kitchen - he'll just sit on the floor and watch in amazement at what goes on, and his eyes light up every time a cabinet door opens.
Naming him was a tough job, and it was down to Rowdy, Barney, Harry Callahan (call 'Cal'), Cowboy, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (call Henry), Iggy, Teddy,Wiley the Wirehair, and Murdoch (Murdach?) the Dachshund. Rowdy, after Rowdy Yates, the Clint Eastwood character in Rawhide was always near the top though, and it sounds a little like Toddy, and he was responding to it, so Rowdy he is, both in name and spirit. It probably didn't hurt that there was a photo of Clint Eastwood on the sidebar to your right when the decision was finally made.
And so, a new era has begun at The Long and Short of it All.

Wirehair Wednesday: Can I Stay Pleeeease?
Boy is this holiday week whizzing by - can you believe it's Wednesday already? Wirehair Wednesday?! Thanks so much to Sue Fell for writing in all the way from the UK with an awesome pic of her boy 'Pepsi.' She writes:
Hi Maggie and Joey
I still love reading your blog, it's great to have a place to go to read all about Dachshunds with others who love them as much as me! I thought I would share this photo of Pepsi. I went into my bedroom the other night and saw a small lump wriggling up under the bedspread from the bottom to the top and out popped Pepsi's head! I had to grab my phone and take a photo as he looked so cute with that sweet "can I stay?" look on his face. He definitely has me wrapped round his little paw.

141 Dachshunds
We're sure that you remember Dachshund U.N., a travelling performance and architectural installation by Bennett Miller in 2010, which made its way around Australia and featured a U.N. replica with Dachshunds as delegates! The project was also made into a 12-minute short film by director Sambodhi Field, which is now making the rounds at some film festivals. Keep up with the film on facebook.
Here's a short trailer.
We covered the project extensively in the archives, but the search function isn't working too well at the moment. Best bet is to click here for an Australia search and weed through the posts if you're so inclined.

Whelping Wirehair Wednesday
It's Wednesday, it's Wirehair Wednesday, and we've got content thanks to our friends at Born-To-Track News & Views. And it couldn't be sweeter. The video notes: Our standard wirehaired dachshund Paika whelped five puppies on Aug. 4, 2011. This was her first litter. The video shows the delivery of the second puppy. The puppies are bred for tracking wounded big game and for hunting.
San Diego Dachshund Picnic 2011
Good times were obviously had at the 2011 San Diego Dachshund Club Picnic, which took place in Balboa Park on July 24th. Sweet.

It's nice to see Jean in person. Great job. Make sure and visit Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue's website to view all of their beautiful dogs waiting for their forever homes.

Wirehair Wednesday: Meet Ardie!
Just look at those eyebrows!
It's Wednesday....and that can mean only one thing: It's Wirehair Wednesday, a day dedicated to our elusive wirehair friends! And boy have we got a bundle of handsome for you today: It's 'Ardie!' Thanks so much to Ardie's mom, Rose Russo, for sending in such nice pics. She writes:
Dear Joey and Maggie,
I love your blog, and I've been following your healthcare issues with concern, I'm so happy to read you are both happy and healthy!!
I am owned by three Dachshunds: Tessa, a 15-yr-old smooth wildboar, Ted is a 10-yr-old smooth B & T dapple, and Ardbeg "Ardie" who is an 8-mo-old wirehair B & T.
These are photos of our little comedian Ardie; maybe someday he'll make it into Wirehair Wednesday! One of these pics was taken the first day he came home with us, he was 8 weeks old and merely 3.3 pounds. He even allows me to try my knitting projects on him! He is a Dachsie through and through, as he is happiest in a cuddly weenie pile with with weenie family. :)
All the best.
We'd be happy to cuddle up with this good-looking trio as well!

(Wheaten) Wirehair Wednesday: Meet Ringo!
Thanks so much to Nancy Nesser for sending in a link about her handsome wheaten wirehaired boy 'Ringo.' Ringo was featured in a story at NewsOK a few weeks ago about an adoption event which was taking place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The event, Central Oklahoma Humane Society's Midnight Woofness Adoption Marathon was hoping to adopt out over 500 dogs and cats in less than two days and set a new national record. Ringo was adopted at the event last year. Turns out this years event adopted out 565 animal companions! Wow. Way to go! Excerpt from NewsOK:
Nancy Nesser lined up shortly before midnight to adopt her new dog, Ringo. He was there — waiting in the middle of the night in a parking lot with a couple hundred other homeless dogs.
“I knew I wanted another dachshund, just because I'm crazy about them,” said Nesser, who lives in Oklahoma City. “I have always heard that the wirehair dachshunds are the clowns of the breed.”
Nesser adopted Ringo during the Central Oklahoma Humane Society's Midnight Woofness adoption marathon last June, and Nesser said the dog has been a perfect fit with her and her two other dogs.
Ringo's family includes two smooth Dachshunds. We're so glad that Ringo found such a great home.

'The Long and Short of it All' Turns Four Years Old
Prost! It's our fourth anniversary and we're gonna party like it's 1929. We had no idea that four years after our very first post on May 28, 2007 that we'd still be blogging about Dachshunds - day in - day out - ad nauseum for even some of the most ardent Dachshundists. Still, we move forward, documenting all the Dachshund news, art, history, and popular culture that we can get our stubby little paws on.
Every year at this time we examine where we are, where we've been, and where we're going with the site by looking at our "About" statement to see if we are still on course:
As the internet's first daily Dachshund news magazine, we're hoping to update this blog almost every day with Dachshund news from around the world, Dachshund stories, videos, famous Dachshunds, photos, art, and history. We hope to keep everything stress free and ad free....just a fun place for Dachshund lovers to kick back, relax, (with your doxie on your lap!) and read all about these lovable little dogs that bring such joy to our lives.
Reading over this again, we seem to be on course, but it's a pretty diverse statement - as diverse as the long dogs and their humans that we document it would seem. So, while we may get a little off topic at times, we do of course try to focus on the dogs that bring us all together on this site. We garner special attention to those stories which invoke some sort of deep emotion - happiness, sadness, passion, hope, despair - so that when you come here in the middle of your day, taking a break from adding up those facts and figures at the office, or dusting the collectibles on the mantel, that you at least feel......something.
Thanks to all our loyal readers and commentors for sticking with us over the years - it's been a fun ride. Your submissions are always the best - we've gotten great story tips, and we love to see your handsome Dachshunds and to read all about them and their antics. Each and every dog is so unique and so special and so loved. We also would like to apologize to all the good folks who have sent us submissions that didn't make it on the site - there are probably 3 or 4 submissions to every one posted, and we just wish we had more hours in the day to get more done.
And so, we wrap up Long and Short of it All post number 2,428. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.
Yours in Dachshund Love,
Joey and Maggie.....

Wine Country Wiener Fest
Hey, it's Wirehair Wednesday, and this is stunning 2-year-old 'Fritz,'
whose human is Pam Carson of Temecula, California
The season sure is heating up for Dachshund events. The Temecula Valley Dachshund Club held its second annual Wine Country Wiener Fest on Sunday at Longshadow Ranch in Temecula, California. The event included family-friendly games, local vendors, raffles, silent auctions, wine tasting, and "Dexter's Derby" Dachshund Races w/Kentucky Derby-style Extravagant Hat Contest. Excerpt from inlandsocal:
There were prizes for contests that included the longest dachshund, which came in at 42" and the best kisser, canine, of course.
Riverside's Sunny Oasis Dachshund Rescue and Friends brought six rescued dachshunds, all of which found new homes. In addition the TVDC named Sunny Oasis as a recipient of the fundraiser proceeds as well as Almost Home Dachshund Rescue.
Swift running doxies competed in several heats and categories, including puppies and mixed breed dogs.
