Adopt Thor a Bernese Mountain Dog Mix

Thor is one gorgeous dog!  Love that wavy coat and beautiful tail!

Thor is a Bernese Mountain dog mix.  He's three years old and already neutered.  Thor sits and takes treats gently.  He walks pretty well on a leash, but he's a big boy, so he could use some training on sometimes pulling.

Have some time for fetch and frisbe?  Thor is your guy.

Please watch Thor's adoption video and then give the Humane Society of Missouri in St Louis a call at 314-951-1562,  Thor's animal shelter ID number is A551251

Tripawd Dog Mandela Deserves a Forever Home

When you read Mandela's story, I think you'll agree:  this dog deserves a loving forever home.  Mandela is a male Terrier mixed breed dog who is approximately 5 years old.  He's currently calling Stray Rescue's Pine Street Animal Shelter home, where everyone loves him.

He's a tripawd (3 legged) with an ear missing
and he has a story to tell.

Photo: Stray Rescue of St Louis
 From Stray Rescue:
There are cases when we say to ourselves: 'If this were a human, he or she would not have survived.'  What many of these dogs endure on the streets is baffling, and this fact is rarely more apparent than during days like today - when Mandela was rescued. [warning: link will take you to a graphic video of Mandela's rescue.]

We received a call about a stray in a field who was in obviously terrible shape.  When the rescue team arrived on the scene, they immediately knew how dire the situation truly was.  On a frigid day, an emaciated, severely injured dog was fighting to stand up.  His name is Mandela.

As our founder, Randy Grim, approached, Mandela looked like a zombie.  He was in shock.  He was extremely malnourished and dehydrated.  Randy quickly found the primary concern - a portion of one of Mandela's back legs was completely cold, black and lifeless.  To Randy's shock, on the inside of Mandela's leg, the bone was completely exposed.  He had been "living" this way for a while.

The rescue team rushed hin back to the Stray Rescue trauma center, where the veterinary team got to work stabilizing him.  His temperature was low and his body was desperately trying to fight off infection.  In all likelihood, his dead leg would have fallen off it not for the bone being there.  And yet Mandela, with his resilient spirit, never surrendered.

Obviously, Mandela has lived the kind of life that is hard to imagine.  Even his lip on the right side of his face was split at one point in his life, having healed into a bifurcated one.  He has had a very, very rough life.  We will never knew what happened to Mandela that brought hin to this point in his life...

In the rush to get him to the shelter, and with the severity of his other injuries, it was hard to notice that Mandela only had one ear as well.

After fighting for his life in intensive care and the successful amputation of one of his back legs, Mandela has made a big three-legged step on the road to a happy life.

Now, Mandela needs a forever home.
For more information about Mandela,
please contact Stray Rescue at 314-771-6121

2 Black Dogs Too Long at the Shelter: Adoptable Dogs

Awhile back I wrote about dogs who spend most or all of their lives in a shelter.  I wondered out loud:  how long is too long.

I caught some flack from some who thought I was promoting euthanasia.  I also received some very thoughtful messages from folks who also had conflicting thoughts and emotions about the quality of life provided in a kennel run at a "no-kill" shelter.  That resulted in a second blog post.

At the time, I ended up just feeling glad that the dog that caused me to confront the issue, Hailey, found a home.

My friend, Kim, has forced me to confront the issue again.  I'm still conflicted and find no good answers within myself.  Pro-euthanasia?  NO.  However, dogs deserve better than to live in a kennel for years.

Kim is a professional photographer with her own business, Creative Photography by Kim Hansen.  She is also a passionate advocate for animals and donates her services to Dogwood Animal Shelter in Osage Beach, Missouri.

Her goal is to show people the beauty in these dogs and cats that she sees, to capture their spirit in a photograph that will get them noticed.  As Kim says:
With so many of them, it takes patience, kindness, understanding, and the ability to connect and gain their trust in order to capture an image that I feel is worthy of using as their 'life line' on a site [Petfinder] for all of the world to see.
That may sound a little dramatic and over the top, but really, aren't these animals worth it?  worth my time, effort, compassin, dedication and ability to do something so important and so life changing?  My answer is YES!  A million times YES!

Here are two dogs whose photographs were taken by Kim over a year ago.  Though I don't know how much longer than a year A-Rod has been there, I do know that Carley has been there for five years.  Almost all of her life.

Carley is listed on Petfinder (by the shelter) as an Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) and Labrador Retriever mixed breed dog.  She looks like a Rottweiler mix to me.

She is 5 years old and has spent her whole life at the shelter.

Carley came to Dogwood Animal Shelter as a puppy and has been there ever since.  Her brother was adopted, but she is still waiting.

Primarily black with some tan, Carley weighs 65 pounds and has been spayed.  She just completed the shelter's 6 week obedience class.  Carley is a smart girl.  She learns fast and is very eager to please.

Adoption fees have been reduced to 1/2 price for Carley.

A-Rod is a Labrador Retriever mixed breed dog.  He's shy so it make take a moment to get acquainted, but shelter staff report A-Rod is a sweet boy.  Primarily black in color, about 4 years old and already neutered.  This playful boy needs a place to call home.  Adoption fees have been reduced to 1/2 price for A-Rod.

Please share Carley and A-Rod via social media.  Use whatever networking means you have at your disposal and let's try and get them real homes.

Those of you reading closely, may have noticed:
  • same "no kill" shelter as Hailey, the dog who'd spent all 8 years of her life in the shelter
  • all black dogs
  • same shelter where we found our birthday boy, Jeffie (and our puppy, Rosie, too)
Dogwood Animal Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter in Osage Beach, Missouri.   They've been in operation for over 30 years and survive on donations and proceeds from their Dogwood Thrift Shop.  Services include:  low-cost spay/neuter clinic, obedience classes, and more. They can be reached via email and their telephone number is 573-348-4411.

Dog Song Saturday: Shelter Dog Music Video

It's Saturday!  Time for a dog song at Talking Dogs.  We're continuing Jeffie's month long birthday celebration with an appropriate dog song music video today.

Shelter Dog is an original dog song composed by Sandy Anderson and performed here by Eric Coslop.  The song was inspired by the dogs at the Cumberland County SPCA and the video encourages viewers to foster, volunteer, donate, and adopt from an animal shelter.

Even if you cannot bear to see these dogs in a shelter environment, please give a listen to this lovely, poignant song.  And while you listen, consider  life as a shelter dog.

Jeffie was a shelter dog.  Even though a very cute puppy, he spent 4 weeks waiting to be adopted.  He's one of the very lucky ones. Tomorrow we'll be featuring 2 great adoptable dogs who've been in a shelter for over a year.  In fact, one has called the shelter home for over 5 years.

So, grab a dog.  A former shelter dog if you've got one.  Sit.  Stay.  Take a moment to reflect while you listen to Shelter Dog.

Fetch more dog song music videos at Talking Dogs (trust me, some are fun and cheerful!).  Fetch your invitation to Jeffie's gala birthday party celebration and join in the fun!  Enter our giveaway!

Fall in Love with Jack, an Adoptable Dog in Missouri

What happens when a dog owner dies and the rest of the family isn't interested in the dog?  In Jack's case, he was taken in by Dogwood Animal Shelter.

Jack has been at the shelter for a few months now and is hoping to find another loving home.  According to shelter volunteers, Jack is a great dog!  He walks nicely on a leash and always has a friendly greeing for everyone.

Only, a couple of years old, Jack still has a lot of energy and is ready for fun!  He invites you to come by and clip a leash to his collar and go for a walk on one of these nice spring days.  Jack's pretty sure you'll fall in love!

For more information about Jack, contact Dogwood Animal Shelter in Osage Beach, Missouri.

Dogwood Animal Shelter was established as a not-for-profit organization in 1976.  They have been a no-kill facility since 1997 and built a new shelter in 2005 which includes a spay/neuter clinic.  In 2010, the shelter spayed/neutered over 1200 animals.  Their Dogwood Thrift Shop provides over half of the funding that keeps the shelter in operation.

Westminster Look Alike Adoptable Dog

Once glance at this adorable little face and I was reminded of Banana Joe, winner of Westminster!

This cute little guy is Manchester.  He's a black Cairn Terrier mixed breed dog.  Animal shelter staff believe he's about 2 years old.

Manchester loves to go for walks, prefers to do his business outdoors and he's already neutered.

Take a look at his adoption video below and you may very well have found a charming new addition to your family.

For more information about Manchester, contact the Humane Society of Missouri Chesterfield Valley animal shelter location at 636-530-0805.  Manchester's animal ID number is A544340

Adoptable Dog Boogie Pilgrim Has Personality to Spare

You really do need a fun loving, car riding, grass rolling guy in your life, right?

Boogie Pilgrim is all that and more!

For starters, he is one handsome dude of a dog.  A beautiful white with some black beauty marks, Boogie Pilgrim is a 45 pound, one year old, Pitbull Terrier mix.  He is working on his house manners and is learning basic training commands.

He may look like a distinguished gentleman in his photo, but you should see him lolling on a comfy bed or couch.  Boogie Pilgrim loves car rides and knows that his place is in the back seat, checking on the world outside the window.  He's an outdoor boy and loves to roll in the grass.  Fetch is his favorite game.

Boogie Pilgrim is a young guy just finding his way in the world.  All he needs is someone to love him and help him be the best dog he can be.

If you think that someone might be you, contact Stray Rescue of Saint Louis at 314-771-6121.  Boogie Pilgrim is calling their Pine Street animal shelter home for now.

Letter from Pit Bull Dog Falcon

This beautiful boy is Falcon.  He's a 2 year old Pit Bull mix who is currently calling Wayside Waifs in Kansas City home.  Below is his message to you, plus a wonderful adoption video!
"Hey there! I'm Falcon, a happy, energetic boy, just searching for a brand new home. I'm loads of fun and ready to go, so I hope you can keep up with me! I am a 2 year old, 46 pounds of solid muscle, Pit Bull Terrier/Pointer mix. I'm a handsome, fascinating combination of breeds and you won't find another dog out there like me! First thing you'll notice about me is my eyes. Oh my, my picture really doesn't do me justice, but come out to meet me and you'll find I have the most beautiful eyes ever. I'm strong and loyal, just like my Pit Bull ancestors. And I'm athletic and active, just like my Pointer ancestors. I love to play and am happy to join you with whatever activity you'd like to do.

I came to Wayside as a transfer from the shelter in Springfield, MO, when they ran out of space for me. With my unique looks and loving, fun personality, it didn't take me long to make a name for myself here. I'm already a volunteer favorite, thank you very much! They take me out for a walk or a run to try to tire me out, but no one has succeeded in that as of yet. It's hard for an active dog like me to live in a kennel, so I really, really appreciate it anytime I can get out to play. When I finally get home, life will be so wonderful! I think about it all the time and look forward to the day I get adopted. That will be the best day ever.

It seems like I'm already at least partially housetrained. I keep my kennel clean and go to the bathroom as soon as I get outside. Please be patient with me when we get home though, as I learn all about my new routines. I love to go for walks, although sometimes I forget my own strength and pull on my leash just a little. A harness would be good for me and make our walks much more enjoyable for both of us. I'll make a really great exercise partner for my new family...always up for a walk or run or hike or just playtime in the backyard. I need and want exercise to keep me happy and healthy, so I hope you're the active sort who likes that kind of thing too.

I love my treats! And I'm smart and eager to please, making me a perfect candidate for training. I hope you'll take the time to help me learn all about what it means to be a great family dog. I've already mastered 'sit' and 'down', and I'm working on 'leave it'. I am happy to come whenever you call me, and am such a good listener when you need something from me. I'm social and sweet and just an all around great dog!

My play with other dogs can get sort of rough and rowdy. I love to play, but not all dogs appreciate my style. So please bring any other dogs you have to meet me before we go home together, just to be sure we get along great.

Please come for me soon! I need a home! I need a family. I need you. I'm waiting for you now.
Love, Falcon"

Adopt Dr Joyce Brothers a Dog at Stray Rescue

Is there a Doctor in the house?  As a matter of fact, there is!

Hi everyone, my name is Dr. Joyce Brothers, also known as JOY to those who know and love me.  Thats because I am pure Joythe happiest girl in the world.

I am somewhat of a celebrity at Stray Rescue.  I have charmed the socks off of all their volunteers.  They spoil me rotten, but what I would really love is a chance at a forever home because I have been living at SR for quite a while.

Some things I love are car rides, playing Frisbee (see my link, I am an expert) having lunch at an outdoor caf, milkshakes at Crown Candy Kitchen, kids, walks in the park, and hiking in the woods.  I am a very experienced hiker.

Lately I have been lucky enough to spend a day or two each week with a volunteer at his office.  I am an official mascot of a company!   I attend meetings and hang out with the gang during lunch.  I am constantly honing my training skills too.  I can sit, wait, give my paw, and my leash walking skills are just about perfect.

Dont I sound like the perfect dog for you?  I promise to be your best and most loyal friend.  Check out my video below and then call Stray Rescue of St Louis at their 2320 Pine Street animal shelter 314-771-6121 and find out more about me.

Stray Rescue is a pawsome organization and their animal shelter is barking good, but I really need a forever home!

Stray Rescue's sole purpose is to rescue stray animals in need of medical attention, restore them to health, and place them in loving adoptive homes. Virtually all of the pets we save have been abused and neglected. They've been dumped on highways, or remote country roads. Abandoned in public parks, empty houses and dark alleys. We've even saved dogs left chained behind buildings after their owners had moved away.

Rescued animals often make the best pets. As a no-kill organization, pets from Stray Rescue seem to understand that they have a second lease on life. In return for a little affection and attention, these remarkable animals reward their new owners with a love and loyalty unmatched anywhere.

Save a Life by Fostering a Dog

On Sundays we usually feature dogs that are available for adoption.  However, adopting a dog from an animal shelter is not the only way to save lives.

A dog in foster care has a much better chance of finding a forever home.  That dog will learn more social skills without the stress that comes with shelter conditions.

The video below features West Side German Shepherd Rescue, but what their foster families have to say about how important it is to take dogs out of an animal shelter setting and get them into homes, is universally true.

Adopt a Black Labrador Retriever, Jenny

Jenny is a beautiful black Labrador Retriever dog who is temporarily staying with the Humane Society of Missouri St. Louis animal shelter.

This sweet girl is only about a year old.  Jenny appears to be housebroken and loves to go for walks on a leash.

As you can see from her adoption video, she's a friendly girl and that tail just doesn't stop wagging.  Jenny can sit on command and is eager to learn some more tricks.

If you're looking for an active companion with lots of love to give, fetch more information about Jenny.  Call the HSMO St Louis animal shelter at 314-647-8800.  Jenny's animal ID is A542541

Adopt Sandy a Pit Bull Terrier Posing as a Reindeer

Sandy is posing as a reindeer in hopes that Santa will bring her a new family for Christmas.  She's a beautiful tan and white Pit Bull Terrier girl currently living at the Humane Society of Missouri animal shelter in St Louis.

That's no place to be living at Christmas!  Especially when you're just a baby like Sandy.  She's only 7 months old, so full of that playful puppy dog energy and ready for adventure.  A sweetheart and a lover, she's looking for a lap to cuddle in and a best friend to love.

Take a look at Sandy's adoption video and you'll see what a lovely girl she really is.  If you're looking to add a furry member of your family, consider sweet Sandy.

For more information, call the HSMO at 314-647-8800.  Sandy's ID number is A541318

Adopt Sweet Xena a Black Lab Mix Looking for Love

When deciding which dog to feature today, I couldn't resist a girl named Xena.  Not only is she named after that pawesome warrior princess, but she looks so sweet and lovely.

Xena is a Labrador Retriever mixed breed dog.  She's about three years old and already spayed.  As you can see from her adoption video, she's black with white accents!   She's a playful girl who already knows how to sit and, from the looks of it, could easily learn how to shake paws.

Right now Xena is living at the Humane Society of Missouri's Chesterfield Valley animal shelter.  Staff there report that she walks nicely on a leash and is a delightful dog.

If you have room in your life for another dog, please consider this sweet girl.  Call 636-530-0805 for more information about Xena.  Her animal ID number is A538458.

National Mutt Day is December 2

Now here's a holiday I can really appreciate!

Today is National Mutt Day!

National Mutt Day is a day to celebrate the many wonderful attributes of mixed breed dogs and facilitate their adoption from shelters.  It was created by pet lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate, Colleen Paige and sponsored by the Animal Miracle Foundation.

At Talking Dogs, we'll be celebrating with our mutt, Jeffie.  He's a Golden Retriever and Border Collie mixed breed dog we adopted from Dogwood Animal Shelter.

Here are just a few suggestions for your celebration of National Mutt Day:
  • Adopt a Mutt from your local shelter or rescue organization.
  • Volunteer at your local shelter - walk or play with some mutts.
  • Have a National Mutt Day party and invite all your friends and their dogs.
  • Join the National Mutt Day Facebook page and post photos of your Mutt.
  • Spend some quality time with your mutt - take a walk, play with a new toy, try some new dog treats.
  • Fetch www.NationalMuttDay.com for more ideas

The best way to celebrate National Mutt Day?

Love your Mutt!

Adopt Aphrodite a Doberman Pinscher Dog

Looking for love?  Here she is!  Her name is Aphrodite and she's a young Doberman Pinscher mix dog.  Just look at that face and tell me you don't see love.

Aphrodite is only about 9 months old, so she still has lots of that wonderful puppy energy.  Curious about everything and ready to explore the world with you.

According to the Doberman Pinscher Club of America, the Doberman Pinscher is breathtakingly perceptive, intuitive, and sensitive. Dobermans are nice-named "Velcro dogs" because they stick to their people.  They also suggest that the Doberman dog breed is not for everyone.  Dobies need a calm, stable, firm leader or they may assume that role for you.

Dobermans are a dog breed that need plenty of exercise every day and plenty of mental stimulation.  If you're looking for an active companion that's smart as a whip, consider Aphrodite.

Right now this beautiful girl is calling the Human Society of Missouri  St Louis animal shelter home.  If you can give Aphrodite a forever home, call HSMO at 314-951-1562.  Her animal ID number is A538578

Black Friday: Black Dogs and Black Dog Syndrome

Black Friday.

For thousands of black dogs, every Friday is black Friday.

Black Dog Syndrome:  dogs that are large and black, especially Labrador Retrievers, shepherd mixes, pit bulls and Rottweilers are passed over time after time in favor of smaller, lighter colored dogs when it comes to animal shelter and rescue adoptions.

A Petfinder member shelter and rescue groups survey found that most pets are listed for 12.5 months on Petfinder.  Black, senior and special needs pets spend almost four times longer on Petfinder.

According to an article published in Psychology today,  Stanley Coren notes:
"There has been speculation that the reason black dogs are being rejected is part of the fabric of our cultural heritage. In ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Norse mythologies, black dogs are often associated with death and the supernatural. They are emissaries of evil and in the folklore of Britain and Europe these demonic black hounds can be found hovering around the border spaces between this world and the next, such as graveyards and places where violence has occurred. The black dogs of folklore are not too very different from normal dogs, except that they are large and very dark, and if you look at their eyes they will sometimes flash red with a fiery glow. Certainly if the Devil has a dog he is big and black."
Coren conducted a survey which allowed people to express their feelings toward dogs which differ only in color.  He tested a total of 60 individuals, targeting Labrador Retrievers using head-shot photographs.  Subjects were asked how much they liked the look of the dog, how friendly they thought it was, how good it would bge as a family pet, and how likely it would be for the dog to be aggressive.

Black dogs rated lower than the other colored (yellow and chocolate) dogs across the board.

As the Black Dog Rescue Project insists:  A dogs coat color has no affect on a dogs temperament and personality.  When adopting your next best friend, be aware that Black Dog Syndrome is real.  Take a second look around the animal shelter and make sure you have not overlooked the black dogs.
