Letter from Pit Bull Dog Falcon

This beautiful boy is Falcon.  He's a 2 year old Pit Bull mix who is currently calling Wayside Waifs in Kansas City home.  Below is his message to you, plus a wonderful adoption video!
"Hey there! I'm Falcon, a happy, energetic boy, just searching for a brand new home. I'm loads of fun and ready to go, so I hope you can keep up with me! I am a 2 year old, 46 pounds of solid muscle, Pit Bull Terrier/Pointer mix. I'm a handsome, fascinating combination of breeds and you won't find another dog out there like me! First thing you'll notice about me is my eyes. Oh my, my picture really doesn't do me justice, but come out to meet me and you'll find I have the most beautiful eyes ever. I'm strong and loyal, just like my Pit Bull ancestors. And I'm athletic and active, just like my Pointer ancestors. I love to play and am happy to join you with whatever activity you'd like to do.

I came to Wayside as a transfer from the shelter in Springfield, MO, when they ran out of space for me. With my unique looks and loving, fun personality, it didn't take me long to make a name for myself here. I'm already a volunteer favorite, thank you very much! They take me out for a walk or a run to try to tire me out, but no one has succeeded in that as of yet. It's hard for an active dog like me to live in a kennel, so I really, really appreciate it anytime I can get out to play. When I finally get home, life will be so wonderful! I think about it all the time and look forward to the day I get adopted. That will be the best day ever.

It seems like I'm already at least partially housetrained. I keep my kennel clean and go to the bathroom as soon as I get outside. Please be patient with me when we get home though, as I learn all about my new routines. I love to go for walks, although sometimes I forget my own strength and pull on my leash just a little. A harness would be good for me and make our walks much more enjoyable for both of us. I'll make a really great exercise partner for my new family...always up for a walk or run or hike or just playtime in the backyard. I need and want exercise to keep me happy and healthy, so I hope you're the active sort who likes that kind of thing too.

I love my treats! And I'm smart and eager to please, making me a perfect candidate for training. I hope you'll take the time to help me learn all about what it means to be a great family dog. I've already mastered 'sit' and 'down', and I'm working on 'leave it'. I am happy to come whenever you call me, and am such a good listener when you need something from me. I'm social and sweet and just an all around great dog!

My play with other dogs can get sort of rough and rowdy. I love to play, but not all dogs appreciate my style. So please bring any other dogs you have to meet me before we go home together, just to be sure we get along great.

Please come for me soon! I need a home! I need a family. I need you. I'm waiting for you now.
Love, Falcon"

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness Month

At Talking Dogs, we're celebrating national Pit Bull Awareness month!

Not technically a dog breed, "Pit Bull" is used in connection with the American Pit Bull Terrier (ABPT), American Staffordshire Terrier (AMSTAFF) and the Staffordshire Terrier (STAFFIE), as well as mixed breed dogs.

Thanks to media coverage, the Pit Bull is probably the most misunderstood dog in our country, perhaps in the world.

Contrary to popular belief, Pit Bulls do not have locking jaws.  They are not born to be mean.  Pit Bulls do not attack more than any other dog breed.  In fact, the American Pit Bull Terrier was the number one family dog in the United States during the first part of the 20th century.

There are many organizations and rescues working tirelessly to promote the truth about Pit Bulls.  One of my favorites is Pit Bull Rescue Central.
Pit Bull Rescue Central (PBRC) is a virtual shelter and educational resource for owners, adopters, rescuers and caretakers of American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers and Pit Bull mixes.  PBRC used the internet to aid Pit Bulls in need through education and placement assistance.  PBRC is dedicated to improving the reputation of the breed by encouraging responsible placements into responsible homes.

The mission of Pit Bull Rescue Central is to:
  • Help relieve suffering of and prevent cruelty to dogs identified as pit bulls and mixes.
  •  Help reduce the number of homeless pit bulls and mixes.
  • Facilitate the rescue and placement of homeless dogs identified primarily as pit bulls into responsible homes.
  • Participate in fundraising in order to provide caretakers of pit bulls and mixes with the means to seek veterinary treatment, spay/neuter, provide food, shelter or other basic necessities; assist a dog from cruel or inhumane treatment.
When you're looking for any kind of  information about Pit Bulls, think of Pit Bull Rescue Central first.  You'll find a wealth of educational materials, links to Pit Bull rescues and adoptable dogs, and so much more.

Pit Bull Terrier, Ella, is Looking for Love: Adopt a Dog

Ella is looking for love and a forever home.  She's waiting for you at the Humane Society of Missouri St Louis animal shelter.

Ella is a 2 year old Pit Bull Terrier.  This beautiful black and white dog has lovely manners and is very affectionate.  Easy going, she loves people and loves going for walks.  She's already spayed and up to date on routine vaccinations.

Take a look at Ella's adoption video below and you'll see what a love she is.  If you have room in your heart and on your couch, give the HSMO a call at 314-647-8800 and ask about Ella.  Her animal ID number is A534961.

Can't adopt right now?  Then please tweet and share Ella.  Let's social network to find this sweet girl her forever home!

If you're looking for a best friend to add to your family, but Ella is not what you had in mind, please take a look at some of Ella's shelter-mates.

Adopt an Abused Pit Bull Terrier Dog Looking for Love

This beautiful boy stopped me in my tracks and I knew I had to feature him today.  Augusten is a red and white Pit Bull Terrier mixed breed dog currently living at the Humane Society of Missouri animal shelter in St Louis.

Augusten is about 9 months old and already neutered.  As you can see in his video, he's definitely a lover, not a fighter.  He came to the HSMO from a very rough situation and you'll notice that the tips of his ears are gone.  His previous owner cut them off with kitchen shears.

This rescued pup already seems to be housebroken and has gentle manners on a leash.  Augusten loves to give kisses and sits for treats.  He needs a loving forever home to enjoy his puppy energy and show him how wonderful life can be.

If you have room in your life and heart for a sweet young dog, please give some consideration to Augusten.  For more information you can call  314-951-1562 and ask about animal ID number A532644.

Adopt a Big Beautiful Black Dog from Stray Rescue St Louis

Igneous is a 2 year old male terrier mixed breed dog.  In person he's as solid and handsome as the photo to the left.  He has an amazing head that he loves to have rubbed.  And who could ignore that ear-to-ear grin.

Igneous wants to be a lap dog, even though it would take a big lap to hold his 64 pounds.  He loves people and craves human attention.  He would do best as the only dog in the home.

A playful guy, he like to release some of that energy through exercise.  If you need a physical fitness buddy, someone who is guaranteed to get you off the couch and into the outdoors, Igneous is your dog.

Igneous is currently living at Stray Rescue of St Louis's Pine Street animal shelter:  2320 Pine Street, St Louis, Missouri.  Call them for more information about Igneous at 314-771-6121.

Founded by Randy Grim, Stray Rescue's sold purpose is to rescue stray animals in need of medical attention, to restore them to health, and then place them in loving adoptive homes.

View the video below to learn more about Randy Grim and Stray Rescue.  As Randy notes, East St Louis is probably second only to Detroit in being very mean streets for homeless dogs.  50% of the animals rescued have been victims of gunshots.

Adopt Benjamin a Pit Bull Australian Cattle Dog

The staff at the Humane Society of Missouri say Benjamin is a favorite dog of theirs and when you watch his adoption video, you'll see why.  He's adorable. Tail wagging, a grin on his face, and frog legs make him pretty dog-gone cute.

Benjamin is a red and white Australian Cattle Dog and Pit Bull Terrier mixed breed dog.  At about 11 months old, he's still got lots of that puppy energy and ready for some fun.  He's neutered, walks nicely on a leash, and sits for treats.  A big lover, he's crazy about people and not at all happy being confined to his cage at the animal shelter.

He's a star student at the sit command and you can watch a very cute video of him showing off his skills here  https://picasaweb.google.com/HSMOpets/Benjamin#

In fact, Benjamin has been at the HSMO St Louis City animal shelter since March 2012 and he needs a place to call home very soon.

If you have room in your heart and in your home, make a call to 314-951-1562 and find out more about Benjamin A526612.

Adopt Bindy a Pit Bull Terrier Dog Looking for Love

Bindy is a beautiful 2 year old Pit Bull Terrier mixed breed dog who is looking for love.  She loves to play and gets along with most other dogs.  Bindy loves people, but needs some of her very own.  She's crate trained, housebroken, good in the car and weighs about 50 pounds.

Right now Bindy is living with a Stray Rescue of St Louis foster home, but she needs a place to call home forever.  For more information about Bindy, give Stray Rescue a call or fill out an adoption form.

Dog Song Saturday: Pit Bull Ban in Honor of Lennox

It's Saturday, so time for a dog song video at Talking Dogs.  Today, in tribute to the late Lennox a Labrador Retriever / American Bull Dog cross, labeled as a pit bull type dog and euthanized by Belfast officials, and to dogs everywhere, we present Pit Bull Ban by Nancy Simmonds.

Pit Bull Ban is from her 9th Litter Musical Tails release.  It tells the story of how Nancy and her second rescued Pit Bull dog, Joey, left the province of Ontario in 2005 to find a better life without dog breed bans. The video shows Joey playing with his doggie best friends and enjoying life free of dog breed discrimination.

Nancy Simmonds is an award winning composer of over 101 purebred dog songs designed to celebrate and honor our canine companions.  The series is entitled Musical Tails and is available for download at iTunes. As soon as I hit "publish" on this post, I'm headed to iTunes or Amazon to make sure Pit Bull Ban is on my personal playlist.

Grab a dog.  Sit.  Stay.  Take a moment to reflect on the life of Lennox and the campaign to end dog breed discrimination.  Fetch more dog song videos at Talking Dogs and be sure not to miss the ones about Pit Bull dogs!  Then scroll down below today's video to explore some barking good dog blogs because today is a Pet Blogger Hop.

Adopt a Pit Bull Terrier Dog Abandoned on a Chain

Diamond in the Ruff lived her whole life on a chain with no chance to run and play.  When her owners moved away, they left her right there.  On her chain.

New folks moved in and took care of her for awhile, until Stray Rescue of St Louis stepped up and rescued Diamond.

These days Diamond calls Stray Rescue's Pine Street Animal Shelter home.  No more chains in her life, she loves her walks.  This photo has caught Diamond in mid-stride, heading out the door to romp and play.

According to Stray Rescue, Diamond is a big, silly, goofy dog with a great smile.  She asks for very little in life:  some kind words, loving attention, and some space to play.

Diamond in the Ruff is a Pit Bull Terrier mixed breed dog.  She weighs 55 pounds and is 3 years old.

If you've got room in your heart and want a friend for life, give Stray Rescue a call at 314-771-6121 and fill out an adoption application .  Located at 2320 Pine Street in downtown St Louis, Missouri, summer adoption hours are Monday through Sunday 10 am to 6pm.

Can't adopt right now?  Consider fostering Diamond or another of the dogs at Stray Rescue.  For every dog that goes into foster care, another dog can be rescued from the hard, hot streets of St Louis.

Adopt a Pit Bull Dog in Missouri

Wilbur - an adoptable Pit Bull in KCMO

May 6 - 12 is Be Kind to Animals Week, sponsored by the American Humane Association.  Celebrate by adopting a dog, foster homing a dog, or supporting a rescue organization.

Why not consider adopting a Pit Bull dog from the Missouri Pit Bull Rescue (MPR).

Wilbur, shown above and below, is a neutered male Pit Bull about one year old.  Wilbur was pulled from a shelter in a municipality with a breed ban.  According to MPR, Wilbur is a silly goofball, outgoing and always ready to have some fun.  He'd make a wonderful running or jogging partner.

Though he didn't have much training when he arrived at MPR, he's very smart and a fast learner.  Wilbur appears to be housebroken.

If you have room in your heart and home for an adorable little clown of a dog, consider Wilbur.  For more information about Wilbur, contact the Missouri Pit Bull Rescue at MPR@mprgroup.net

All Dogs Banner

The Missouri Pit Bull Rescue is an all volunteer non-profit group dedicated to rescuing any Pit Bull that needs help.  They regularly pull Pit Bull dogs from "death row"  and sometimes take dogs who are losing their homes due to breed bans.  MPR does not have a shelter and use both boarding and foster care.  They keep the dogs as long as it takes to find each one the perfect home.  Learn more about the Missouri Pit Bull Rescue at www.mprgroup.net

Dog Song Saturday: Pit Bull Blues by John Shipe

Clarabelle - an adoptable dog in KCMO
It's Dog Song Saturday at Talking Dogs and we're doing something we've never done before:  an encore presentation!  Way back in October 2010, we featured Pit Bull Blues song and dog music video in honor of National Pit Bull Awareness Day.

We decided, in light of all the Pit Bull dog news of late - like the recent Maryland Court of Appeals ruling declaring all put bulls (and pit bull dog mixes) "inherently dangerous" by virtue of their looks alone and that crazy Baltimore columnist, Dan Rodrick's uninformed comments declaring pit bull dogs "four-legged time bombs" that should not be allowed in public - to take a few minutes to visually and audibly, remind folks what great dogs are called Pit Bulls.

Even if you've heard Pit Bull Blues by John Shipe before, take a moment and enjoy it again.  Then pass it along as learning tool for those who are not informed.  And while you're at it, take a look at this blog post from Oh, Corbin:  You call me a Pit Bull like it's a bad thing.  Then pass that along, too.

Grab a dog.  A Pit Bull if you're lucky enough to have one, though any dog will do.  Sit.  Stay.  Snuggle with that dog.  Relax and enjoy Pit Bull Blues written and performed by John Shipe.

In need of even more Pit Bull dog musical treats?  Then fetch our August 2011 Dog Song Saturday blog post:  Pit Bull Rescue Woman - another original song by John Shipe that celebrates real life Pit Bull rescuers from around the world.

Inspired to add a Pit Bull dog to your family?  Check out Clarabelle (above left).  She's a Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Pit Bull Terrier mixed breed dog and available for adoption for the Missouri Pit Bull Rescue in Kansas City, MO.

Want to keep your toe tapping and a smile on your face?  Fetch our collection of Dog Songs at Talking Dogs.   Be sure to scroll down below today's dog song video and explore some awesome dog blogs because today is the Pet Blogger Hop.
