Marsz Jamników. Kraków, Poland - 2011

One of the premier Dachshund events of the world took place on Saturday, September 4th in Kraków, Poland:  the 2011 Marsz Jamników, or March of the Dachshunds.  A band led hundreds if not thousands of Dachshunds through Kraków streets to the main square where contests, including a costume contest was held.  The spectators were obviosly delighted to see such a spectacle.  As are we!

The Dog Days of Summer/Win Your Own Dachshund Quilt!

Thanks to our pals 'Turbo' and 'Lily' for sending in such nice photos and captions!  There's more than corn in Indiana! Four-legged family members had their day in the sun last weekend during the annual Dog Days of Summer event at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point, Indiana.  Dog lovers from throughout Northwest Indiana converged on the Show Pavilion for a chance to mingle with the like-minded and even look for a new canine friend needing a forever home.

MidWest Dachshund Rescue set up shop at the event, and their supporters, foster dogs, and alum came out to pet and be petted, and hopefully find some new furever families!   In the top photo above,  a supporter delights in meeting foster dog 'Weebles.'

MWDR alum 'Bailey' was the real show-stopper with her 'practical' agility demonstration.

Bailey is shown pandering a patron for a piece of pepperoni pizza. The little fireplug kept her balancing act up until the last crumb was gone. She lost her bid for a slice of pie, but was rewarded with a dog treat as a consolation prize. (But we bet this trick works at home!)

And while we're on the subject of MWDR, don't miss your chance to own this fantastic Dachshund quilt!  Put together by MWDR volunteers, and aptly named "Rescue Tails," this handmade quilt will be raffled at Dachsiefest in Danville, IL on September 10, 2011.  WINNER NEED NOT BE PRESENT.

The 19th Annual Western Dachshund Club's Wiener Walk and Picnic

If you were anywere near Winskill Park in Tsawwassen, BC, Canada on Sunday, chances are you attended the 19th Annual Western Dachshund Club's Annual Wiener Walk and Picnic.  What else would you do after all?   The event also featured games and a costume contest.  See 25 photos at the Delta Optimist.

Get Yourself to Luverne, Minnesota Tonight

It doesn't matter if it's by plane, train, or automobile, find a way to get yourself to Luvurne, Minnesota today for the 2011 Hot Dog Night.  Free hot dogs, a Wiener Dog Beauty Contest, Wiener Dog Races - the list goes on and on - we even heard that there was a hot dog eating contest this year.  Hopefully our pals 'Oscar' and 'Hans' will give us a run down of the big event again this year.  They write:

We have been getting in training once again for HOT DOG NITE in Luverne, MN, next Thursday. We have been doing a lot of cross-country running out in the grove chasing squirrels, so a quick sprint down the street should be nothing. We are focused on bringing the Championship across the border to Iowa!

3rd Annual Hawaii Wiener Derby!

The 2011 Hawaii Wiener Derby took place on Saturday, May 14th at the Hawaiian Humane Society.  Over 130 Dachshunds came out to enjoy the event which included on-site adoptions, contests, games, food, and a mini expo!  The Hawaii Wiener Derby is one of Hawaii's leading dog events!  Thanks so much to 'Nickel' and 'Ruby,' HWD Race Coordinators for writing in with awesome photos:

It’s Nickel and Ruby again shouting out from Kaneohe, Hawaii. Well we had our Hawaii Wiener Derby again! Our third one was a great turnout with 130 plus doxies baking in the Honolulu sun. A Note From Joey and Maggie: We're Back! And We Visited The Wienermobile!

Greetings fellow Dachshund Lovers.  We're back from vacation, and boy did we need it.  We visited our grandparents for Mother's Day, and they are two of our favorite humans, so we had a great time.  We also visited with our Dachshund country-cousin 'Rudy,' and his young pain-in-the-neck brother 'Baxter,' a Havanese who is just getting out of puppyhood.  We had a fun time though.

We headed back to Chicago for MidWest Dachshund Rescue's 3rd Annual Cross Town Bark Around Fundraiser on Saturday - and WOW!  What an event!  There were over 500 humans in attendance, and a good 300 or so Dachshunds.  Between the wiener races, free hot dogs, Wienermobile, cake walk, raffle prizes, silent auctions, and Doxie store, we sure kept ourselves busy.  What an awesome event.  If you live in the MidWest, make sure to plan on attending next year.

On the home front, Joey and Maggie were in good health for the vacation.  Maggie has to spend a day at the vet's today to get an ACTH stimulation test to see how her trilostane is helping her for her Cushing's.  Joey won't like being left home alone.  We're hoping to schedule Maggie's surgery for next Tuesday to remove her anal tumor.  It's starting to bug her more, but she should be far enough away from her pancreatitis attack to go ahead with surgery (surgery can induce pancreatitis).  It's going to be a risky surgery for her with her heart murmur, Cushing's, and pancreatitis, but she's feeling really good right now - running around outside like a puppy - so hopefully all will be OK.

Wine Country Wiener Fest

The season sure is heating up for Dachshund events.  The Temecula Valley Dachshund Club held its second annual Wine Country Wiener Fest on Sunday at Longshadow Ranch in Temecula, California.  The event included family-friendly games, local vendors, raffles, silent auctions, wine tasting, and "Dexter's Derby" Dachshund Races w/Kentucky Derby-style Extravagant Hat Contest.  Excerpt from inlandsocal:

There were prizes for contests that included the longest dachshund, which came in at 42" and the best kisser, canine, of course.

Riverside's Sunny Oasis Dachshund Rescue and Friends brought six rescued dachshunds, all of which found new homes. In addition the TVDC named Sunny Oasis as a recipient of the fundraiser proceeds as well as Almost Home Dachshund Rescue.

Swift running doxies competed in several heats and categories, including puppies and mixed breed dogs.

Midwesterners Mark Your Calendar: MWDR's Crosstown Bark Around Fundraiser

If you live in the Midwest, you're not going to want to miss MidWest Dachshund Rescue's 3rd Annual Crosstown Bark Around Fundraiser on Saturday, May 14, 2011.  This year's event promises to be bigger and better than ever, as the location has been moved to a fairground in Wheaton, Illinois, about an hour outside of Chicago.  The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will be there, dash in Wiener races, socialize with hundreds of Dachshunds, and win AWESOME raffle prizes or silent auction items.  We'll be there, so be sure and say hi if you see us!  Here are all the details:

One of the highlights of the Cross Town Bark Around fundraiser will be the drawing for the winner of this "Rescue Rainbows Raffle Quilt" made by MWDR supporters.  MWDR put out a call for donations of dachshund themed quilt blocks, and received over 40 wonderful squares, each one unique in it's own way.  Twenty of those blocks were made into this quilt.  Almost every block has a special story to tell, as many of the blocks represent foster dogs, adopted dogs, or dogs that have gone over the rainbow bridge.  This large machine quilted lap quilt measures approximately 59" x 71", and is backed with black dachshund print fabric and has a sleeve for hanging.

Buy raffle tickets at the event, or on-line at MWDR.  1 for $1, 12 for $10, 25 for $20, or 70 for $50.  Winner need not be present to win.

Thanks to an Anonymous Dachshund Lover for reminding us that the big Buda Wiener Dog Races are coming up THIS WEEKEND in Buda, Texas!  That's right, the 14th Annual Buda Lions Country Fair and Wiener Dog Races will take place on April 30 and May 1 at City Park. The fair has many exciting elements including a bar-b-que cook-off, bake-off, food vendors, arts and crafts, Buda bee, pet parade, world famous wiener dog races, live music and entertainment, and washer tournament. The theme for the wiener dog races this year is Alice in Wienerland. The cost is $3 per person 13 years of age and up for the weekend and kids 12 and under are free.

This is a very nice, if slightly long, documentary following Ari Moffatt as she enters her wiener dog, 'Sandy,' into the 2010 Buda Wiener Dog Festival and Races by youtuber Kullerdben.

And finally, The 2011 Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals returns to the Los Alamitos Race Course in Los Alamitos, California, for the 16th year on Saturday, July 9, 2011. Enjoy the best wiener dog racing in the world at the premier Quarter Horse race track in America. Mystic Krewe de Mutts

It's Mardi Gras season, and the Dachshunds are ready to party!  Baton Rouge, Louisiana, kicked off its Mardi Gras celebration Sunday with the 12th annual "Mystic Krewe de Mutts" parade downtown, with up to 10,000 folks in attendance.  Pet lovers, dogs of every shape and size, vendors and animal-rescue organizations gathered on North Boulevard between 4th and 5th streets to celebrate the event, hosted by the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society.  Read more about it at and see lots of pics at Isureville.com.

South Beach Dachshund Winterfest 2011

Hundreds of long dogs and their humans descended on Lummus Park in Miami Beach, Florida, on Saturday for the annual South Beach Dachshund Winterfest.  Activities included Dachshund Fortune Telling, Mini Massage, Doxie Funhouse (tunnels, Odor-ama, scary badgers!), a Costume Contest, Singing of the Dach Song and The Grand March!   We're so jealous.

Dachshunds Parade on New Years Eve in Key West

It must be the beginning of a New Year, because as sure as that big ball dropped in New York City (ball...did someone say BALL?!), Dachshunds converged in Key West, Florida, for the 6th Annual Key West Dachshund Walk.  In this photo released by the Florida Keys News Bureau, Wirehairs 'Winston,' left, and 'Goodman,' costumed as vintage aviators, are pushed in the annual parade, Friday, December 31, 2010.  The event attracted almost 200 of us pint-sized canines, and has become a New Year's Eve tradition.

Mark Your Calendars: Scarecrow Festival

If you live in the Midwest, you don't want to miss the Wiener Races which are a part of the Scarecrow Festival in beautiful downtown St. Charles, Illinois, THIS Saturday.
The huge festival is celebrating it's 25th year and features a downtown park full of handcrafted whimsical scarecrows on display competing for prizes. Bring the kids to the carnival, petting zoo, live entertainment and craft show.
Canine Corner Events include Wiener Races sponsored by MWDR on Saturday at 1:00p.m. There will be 4 divisions:

New York's Twentieth Annual Dachshund Octoberfest

Congratulations to New York's Dachshund Friendship Club for hosting their 20th Annual Dachshund Octoberfest on Saturday in Washington Square Park in New York City.  This bi-annual meetup is an Institution in Dachshund Meetups, of which Dachshund meetups all over the country and world are modeled after and compared to.  It has brought some of the best photos and videos of Dachshund gatherings on the net.  Excerpt from Washington Square News:

"We do it twice a year as a social gathering for owners and dogs to interact and also see all the different varieties of dachshund, such as wire, smooth and long-haired," said Adrian Milton, who manages the event as part of the Dachshund Friendship Club.
At 1 p.m., the group joined together to sing "Dachs Song" by Paul de Vries, a song that encompasses all things loved by dachshund owners. The final lines read "Dachsie, meine dachsie, the best canine under the sun, called 'wiener' or 'sausage' or 'hot dog,' we know that you're number one."

Trouble at Cincinnati's Running of the Wieners 2010

Dozens of Dachshunds dressed as Hot Dogs dashed their way through Fountain Square in Downtown Cincinnati, Ohio on Friday, kicking off the "nation's biggest Oktoberfest celebration," Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati USA.
The day couldn't have started worse when 'Charlie,' the two-time defending champion of the annual wiener dog race, bit Fox News reporter Meghan Mongillo in the fingers as she was interviewing him.  Maybe Charlie has seen Fox News.  Regardless, it wasn't the nicest thing to do and karma got the best of him this year as he was dethroned, and the crown went to pretty red smooth 'Greta!'  Way to go girl! 
In Charlie's defense, it's stated that he is a rescue dog, and is quite protective.  His human was very apologetic and offered to pay for any medical bills.  The reporter went to an urgent care facility where she got antibiotics, a new bandage, and a tetanus shot.

Never Forget

Speaking of Dachshund Delights, we are honored that your 'Long and Short of it All' host 'Joey' is featured in this month's newsletter and that 'Maggie' is Dachshund of the Month!

 

Joey continues to recover very well.  His appetite continues to improve, and he has not vomited since last Sunday morning.  He is off his anti-nauseants and has been started on ursodiol for his "gallbladder sludge."  He has an appointment next week for his second monthly DOCP injection for Addison's Disease, and his 2-week post-surgery follow-up.
