Hoganschiest, The Invisible Dachshund

Reported to be the hit of noontime activities at September's Golden Gate Dachshund club specialty was Hoganschiest, the invisible Dachshund.  Bill Nix (left) did judging honors, including thorough examination on table (Hoganschiest had two!) and observation of gait.  Mel Cutler brought Hoganschiest back from Germany and also handled during lunchbreak of regular class judging.  Most exhibitors ate at ringside in order not to miss this hilarious performance.  Photo by Bill Francis.

Stella, the GRAND Champion

Excuse us while we bask in her beauty - it's 'Stella,' the first dual champion longhaired Dachshund female to attain the grand champion title in the United States. Apparently, according to the Post Crescent, to honor those dogs that are super examples of their breed, the AKC started the grand championship program in 2010; previously the highest award was champion. Stella's human, Anne Schmidt, who operates a small hobby kennel at her home in the Town of Center, Wisconsin says:  “I’m very lucky. It took me 30 years to get there, but I got there."

Let's hear it for Boone!

We couldn't be happier to report that Helen Paradise, who has submitted many stories over the years here, has her first AKC Champion of Record in one HANDSOME red smooth named 'Boone.'  Way to go Boone and Helen!  She writes:

Hi Joey and Maggie

Love your blog, read it everyday. I wanted to bring some exciting news to you and your readers. On Saturday June 11th, my 16 month old red smooth male, Boone, officially became my first AKC champion of record. He won a 5 point major and was awarded Winners Dog and Best of Opposite Sex at the famous Greenwich Kennel Club (GKC) dog show in Norwalk, CT. From the GKC website: ‘The GKC is one of the oldest all-breed dog clubs in the tri-state area of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. Its membership is comprised of area dog enthusiasts with interest in conformation, obedience and performance events. GKC held its first annual all-breed dog show in 1930. Today, this well-established outdoor dog show is one of the largest held in the New England area.’

Boone’s official title is now Ch Tecklewood Huntin’ For Fun Ms. He has brought nothing but joy to me this past year and is now living with an awesome family in Queens, NYC along with another male black and tan dachshund, Brownie.

Owners Dr. & Mrs. A. L. Korn, Memphis, believe Utz v d Traben is the first Longhaired Miniature to earn the Utility Dog degree in the U.S.  Mrs. Korn handled this import.  His wins include a 199 and Highest Scoring Dog in Trial.

2010 Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals Champ: Calvin, The Fastest Wiener In The West!

Congratulations to Albuquerque, New Mexico native red smooth 'Calvin,' who has officially earned the title of The Fastest Wiener in the West by winning the 15th Annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals Thursday at the Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade. Way to go Calvin! The Wiener Nationals are the United States national Dachshund racing championships sponsored by the Wienerschnitzel food chain. Regional qualifiers are held in the Southwestern United States (California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico), with the final 8 Dachshunds racing for the national title every December in San Diego as part of the Holiday Bowl.

This has been a big year for Sully [the 2009 Champion], San Clemente's most celebrated wiener. But the dog came up a little short Thursday at Wienerschnitzel's 2010 Wiener Nationals in San Diego.
Sully's San Clemente owners report that Calvin, a deft dachshund from New Mexico, was the winner of an eight-dog finale that produced a bit of chaos among the runners-up.
After originally thinking Sully may have placed third, San Clemente's Miranda Libres, who owns Sully with her boyfriend Juan Flores, learned that Sully finished second. A video replay confirmed it, Libres' mother reported via e-mail.
As the 56-foot race began, Libres stood at the finish line trying to coax Sully to come to her, but someone bumped her out of the way and she thinks Sully lost sight of her, unable to focus on the finish line. Calvin, meanwhile, stayed focused on his favorite tennis ball and took the win.

Dachshunds To Watch Out For: Tug, the No.1 Smooth Dachshund in the United States

Swoon!  Did someone say handsome?  This is 'Tractor Tug,' or just 'Tug' for short.  He was born and bred in Washington Island, Wisconsin, and is the No. 1 all-breed smooth Dachshund in the US.  He will be heading to the next Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in February.  We're rootin' for ya Tug, it's time for a Dachshund Best in Show!  Read all about this big guy at the Green Bay Press Gazette. 

The 'Muhammad Ali of Wiener Racing,' Baron Passes

One Handsome Smooth

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of 'Baron,' the "Muhammad Ali of Wiener Racing," after hearing of his passing on October 3rd.  The Placentia, California native was just a month shy of his 18th birthday.  Excerpt from the OC Register:

Baron, a mahogany, standard dachshund who made numerous television appearances during his racing career – including two on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" – died at home last week.

Even with winning the 1997 Wiener Nationals, 1998 Champion of Champions, and 1999 Ultimate Challenge at the Los Alamitos Race Course, Rowland said he will remember his dog's greatest accomplishment as being a wonderful pet and companion.

Ron Rowland and his wife, Betty, bought Baron from a Northern California breeder when he was 14 weeks old. The Placentia couple didn't intend to race Baron when they bought him, but quickly realized their dog had the gift of speed.

Weighing in at 35 pounds, Baron trained at Champion's Park in Placentia and the Yorba Linda Community Center.

Baron was featured on numerous television programs during his career. His last major appearance was in the 2008 documentary "Wiener Takes All."

The 2010 Dachshund National Specialty Best of Breed

It almost feels like we were there! The Dachshund Club of Santa Ana Valley (DCSAV) was the host club for the Dachshund Club of America (DCA) 2010 National Speciality September 28th - October 2nd. Congrats to the champ and all the beautiful dogs who competed.  We don't want to spoil the surprise, you'll just have to watch the video to see who won Best of Breed.  Via youtuber purebredstudios.

Mr. and Mrs. Erik Holmberg's CH HOLMDACHS CONSTANT FAVORITE

Here is Favorite photographed at 10 1/2 years of age.  He was one of the four top winning Dachshunds in 1962.  In 1963, Favorite was among the six top winners and in 1964, he was one of five that headed the list of top winners.  He was also the Number 2 Smooth Dachshund in the U.S. that year.
Champion Favorite's latest of many champion get, Ch. Holmdachs Constant Comment (dog), finished in April 1970 with three majors.
Rudi Tauskey says of Favorite, "A truly great dog."  Then Mr. Tauskey adds, "He should be used widely at stud."  Of course, during most of the last five years, he has been out of the U.S.A., so he has not been too available.
Favorite does seem to reproduce his lovely head, neck, shoulders, length and spring of ribbing and well let down hocks, beautiful rear and his gorgeous correct movement.

Vancouver Wiener Champ: Joey Delivers Again at Hastings Racecourse

Congratulations to all Sixty-Four Long and Lows who competed for the purse at a showdown Saturday and Sunday in Vancouver, Canada, in the Second Annual 'Wiener Takes All' Dachshund races at Hastings Racecourse.  This is a great video of the Final by youtuber TelePhotoBC who have documented all the heats. 
Special congrats goes out to the returning champ, 3.5-year-old red smooth 'Joey,' and his human Nancy Green, for taking the crown again this year.  Way to go!

Meet Penny Lane, Los Alamitos Wiener Nationals Champion!

Congrats again to 'Penny Lane,' this year's champion from the 2010 Los Alamitos Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals, which took place on Saturday in Los Alamitos, California.  Ms. Lane beat out 98 Dachshunds to take the crown!  She is seen here with her human Trish Ausilio, and city of Cypress Mayor Prakash Narain.
Excerpt from the OC Register:

An estimated 12,000 people attending this year’s event.
Penny Lane’s win collected $1,000 for Ausilio, and an official Wienerschnitzel crystal trophy and a red dog house.
Proceeds from the event benefited the Seal Beach Animal Care Center.
In addition, Wienerschnitzel will award Ausilio a trip for two, plus Penny Lane, to San Diego to compete in the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals Grand Finale at the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl's Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade on Dec. 30.

Dachshunds On Parade in Ellensburg, Washington

Congratulations to Jessie Ross and her beautiful red piebald 'Ruby' for taking 1st Place in the Wiener Races at the 8th annual Dachshunds On Parade in Ellensburg, Washington on Saturday.  You're a CHAMP Ruby!  We can't thank Jessie enough for sending in such a nice photo - and Joey and Maggie want to add that if there was a lookalike contest at the event, you would've scored that as well!  Fantastic!   Jessie writes:

Hi Joey and Maggie,

This is a picture of me and Ruby, my 1 1/2 year old red piebald shorthair. Yesterday she came in 1st place in the miniature Dachshund races in Ellensburg, WA. Ruby runs in the backyard with her big sister, Bettie the black lab everyday, so beating over 100 other miniatures was a piece of cake. This reigning champion can't wait to compete again next year. Zeus Ends Reign As Top Dog At Indiana Wiener Dog Nationals

After 4 years as the reigning champion Wiener Dog, Zeus didn't cut the mustard this year at the 17th Annual Wiener Dog Nationals on Saturday at Germanfest in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  There's always next year Zeus, and we hope this doesn't put you in retirement!  This race comes after some tough talk in the comments section of Budrick Howls Foul About Ft. Wayne Wiener Nationals just a year ago:

Budrick won the race. It was a good race but all my friends and I were at the finish line and Budrick won by at least half a dog. Its almost a year later and the truth must be told.

Blogger from April 4th...Next, tell us how Germany won WW2 and how McCain beat Obama. Zeus...3 starts, 3 first place finishes. THE CHAMP. Saw that race and, wow, Zeus was jogging and smoked that half-pint wanna-be dog.

This year, according to Zeus' human Grant Stupeck, Zeus lost his legendary focus toward the end of the first group of 64 dogs, barking at the dog in the lane next to him.  Of course congrats goes out to 'Fonzie' who took the crown this year.  Way to go Fonzie!

Buda Wiener Dog Races 2010: Photos and Champion

Congratulations to all the Dachshunds who raced at the 2010 Buda Wiener Dog Races in Buda, Texas over the weekend.  Over 600 dogs competed to take the crown in the 13th annual event, which went to red smooth 'Alexander,' seen here, and his human Keith Rodriguez of Hewitt, Texas.  Way to go Alexander!  Besides a trophy, our hero received roses, $500, and what looks to be a great treat basket!
