Happy Holidays From The Sheridan Avenue Boys

The holidays would not be complete without a photo from those Sheridan Avenue Boys - Jack, Jetson, Jordan, Lincoln, & Lego - or as your 'Long and Short of it All' hostess 'Maggie' calls them - Handsome, Handsome, Handsome, Handsome, and HANDSOME!

The boys' mom just finished up a "365 Project" - she has been posting a new photo of these guys every day for the last year.  These are two of the final photos.  Check 'em all out at 365 Project.

The Making Of A Dachshund Christmas Card

The finished product always looks so effortless!  By youtuber spudwheat.

We Wish You A Merry Christmas!

May All Your Dachshund Dreams Come True.

Wiener Wonderland (to the tune of Winter Wonderland)

Dog tags ring, are you listenin'?
In the lane snow is glistenin'.
It's yellow, not white - I've been there tonight,
Marking up my Wiener Wonderland.
Smell that tree? That's my fragrance.
It's a sign for wand'ring vagrants:
"Avoid where I pee, it's my property!
Marked up as my Wiener Wonderland."
In the meadow Dad will build a snowman,
Following the classical design.
Then I'll lift my leg and let it go, man,
So all the world will know it's mine-mine-mine!
Straight from me to the fencepost,
Flows my natural incense boast:
"Stay off of my turf, this small piece of earth.
I mark it as my Wiener Wonderland."

Be safe and Merry Christmas!

Image source: early 1900's postcard. We post this poem every year (you can never get too much of a good thing!) - we slightly modified a popular dog poem to make it Wiener specific! Original source unknown.

If you have a hankering this season to revisit some of those ooey gooey Dachshund Holiday Videos, make sure and check out the recap of our favorites we did last year at this time:  Classic Dachshund Christmas Videos.

Dachshunds Top On 'Naughty' List!

So tell us something we DON'T know!  Janet Storm over at the The Daily Reflector out of Greenville, North Carolina, muses over her naughty but handsome boy 'Clifford':

There's something about the holiday season that brings out the worst in my elderly dachshund. Make no mistake — mischief has been his second nature since he first arrived in my life. But every December he ramps up the bad boy attitude and gets into trouble with a capital T — and that stands for Christmas tree.
Perhaps this a partly my fault. The first week of every December I use vacation days to complete all my Christmas baking, shopping, shipping and decorating. It's a tradition that dates back for years and allows me to relax and enjoy the latter part of the month.
Clifford adores this vacation — or bakation as I refer to it — because I am home, the house is full of wonderful scents and he has the opportunity to wreak havoc.
At the top of his priority flowchart is stealing and consuming as many baked goods as he possibly can. I try and thwart him in this goal, but old age has made Clifford wily. He has perfected the ability to slip beneath my feet and trip me while I'm carrying a full cookie tray. He pulled this move during my most recent bakation, and when a frosted sugar cookie tipped off the edge of my tray, he had it halfway down his throat before I'd even regained my balance. A scolding caused him to run into the living room to sulk and plot further thefts. There was not a scintilla of remorse on his face when I checked on him later. His only regret, I suspect, is that I managed to hold onto the tray.

And what's wrong with that?!  Read more of Clifford's amusing holiday antics over at The Daily Reflector.

A Note From Joey and Maggie: Santa!

Santa took time out of his busy schedule to visit us at our local Chicago Dachshund meetup on Sunday!  We were thrilled.   There were over 40 Dachshunds in attendance!

Your 'Long and Short of it All' hostess 'Maggie' generally does her best to avoid both people and dogs at meetups.

But Joey will ask for a good scratchin' from anyone who comes down to his level.

Happy Holidays from Chester!

Thanks to an anonymous Dachshund lover for sending this in.  The photographer notes:  Isn't he a ham!?!

Make sure to check out more photos of handsome black and tan 'Chester' over at flickr.  You'll be glad you did.

Wirehair Wednesday: Santa Pepsi!

Ho Ho Hum

You may remember our pal 'Pepsi,' who hails all the way from the UK, from his puppy shot when he was just six-months-old, way back in April of 2009.  Looks like he's all grown up now and enjoying another holiday!  His human, Sue Fell, writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

I'm still enjoying your blog very much, nice to read about other dachsies all over the world!  I thought you might like this photo of my little rascal Pepsi in his new Santa hat.  What a poser, he loves getting his photo taken - his big brother Max, a mini smooth-hair, would have nothing to do with wearing hats BOL!

Christmas in the Motherland

While we may not know the language, we are sure drawn in by the sights and sounds of the magical Wiesbaden-Mainz German Teckelklub.

Here, a videographer travels through Germany to document Christmas traditions, which of course wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Dachshund Club. By youtuber DIUNTERNEHMERGmbH.

Festive Thanksgiving Wishes

..and special people like you.

We're hoping that everyone has a grand Thanksgiving!  Thanks so much to our pals 'Sampson,' 'Tommy Lee,' and 'Gina Marie' for sending us this nice Dachshund Hallmark card in the mail.  And there's some truth there - "It's all about the thanks."
We're incredibly thankful this year that your 'Long and Short of it All' host 'Joey' is still with us to celebrate this holiday season.  It was so touch and go with him and his medical issues this year - a virtual rollercoaster of emotions - as regular readers of this site know.  And thanks so much to everyone for all your support during those troubling times.  It was all your well wishes and prayers that helped pull him through to recovery - we honestly believe that, and are forever grateful.  And also thanks to our local friends who helped out with Joey or offered support - again, we are eternally grateful.
Thanks to all of our regular readers who have stuck with us over the years, and those who share the site with other folks; thanks for all the comments on the posts, and thanks for all the reader submissions.  We're incredibly behind with submissions - there are probably 40 or 50 in line for posting - we're hoping to get to each and every one in the near future.  We're also incredibly behind on hundreds of e-mail replies for the site - but appreciate every letter that we get.  Joey and Maggie need an Administrative Assistant sometimes!
And finally, thanks so much to the lovable Dachshunds who fill our lives with such pleasure and joy.  Remember to keep those chairs pushed in at the dining room table tomorrow to avoid any jumping up of the little beasts who would love to take their turn at that turkey!  But surely the little ones deserve just a little sample (or two!) at some point during the festivities.

Have a great Thanksgiving - may you and yours be healthy and happy.  What are you thankful for?

Gear Up for the Holidays and Support Rescue!

Thanks so much to Maria Adams for sending in such nice photos and reminding us that we need to get over to Dachshund Rescue of North America's Holiday Store to scoop up some goodies before they are all gone!  She writes:

Hi Joey & Maggie,

Check out these must have Dachshund Christmas items that DRNA has in their Doxie Store. All proceeds from these sales go back to helping more dachshunds in need!

Shopping for Dachshunds: Christmas in July

Just 5 months until Christmas - drive all your neighbors crazy this year with this 3-foot-long Lighted Lawn Dachshund:

The lawn can be a very difficult place to spruce up for the holidays. There is no need to fret anymore thanks to this festive lawn decoration. The item depicts a lit daschund dressed in a colorful red bow as he too prepares for Christmas. There is a total of 100 incandescent mini lights on 18 gauge wire that are clipped to the 0.25 inch steel frame. This item has been dipped in enamel to provide greater than average protection against rusting. Attached to the bottom of this decoration is a 7 inch yard stake that you can use to firmly plant it into the ground. Setup could not be any simpler. Comes with a 6 inch lead cord. The strands feature straight line construction so if one bulb burns out, the rest will remain lit. This yard art will help you show off your love of Christmas to friends, family, and everyone in your neighborhood.

We're betting that they would sell a bunch more if they spelled it DACHSHUND.  $81.89 at Christmas Depot.  Buy the frame only for $29.95 here.

Happy 4th on the 6th from the Sheridan Avenue Boys

These guys rock our world.  The stunning Sheridan Avenue Boys write:  Better late than never! Hope everyone had a great 4th!
