Dachshunds in Politics: Westminster Dog of the Year Contest 2011

The 2011 Westminster Dog of The Year competition took place in Victoria Tower Gardens on October 13, 2011 in London, England. The annual competition was won by Conservative MP for Tiiverton and Honiton Neil Parish with his Labrador 'Wilberforce,' who was among the 15 Conservative MPs to enter versus only two Labour MP entrants.  Politics may be a dog-eat-dog world, but for one day at least, the dogs were cute and cuddly.  Above, Harriett Baldwin MP stands in sight of Parliament with her English Cream Dachshund 'Poppy' during the competition.  Source.

Hurricane Preparedness

Be Prepared!  Like good Boy Scouts, 'Jetson' and 'Jordan,' two of those HANDSOME five Sheridan Avenue Boys, are ready for Hurricane Irene should it hit close to their Virginia home.  We hope you're prepared too, and stay safe!

Lincoln Makes Special Appearance at Hallmark Store

Our buddy 'Lincoln,' one of those HANDSOME Sheridan Avenue Boys, made a special appearance (did he give pawtographs?) at Lloyd's Hallmark in Charlottesville, Virginia, last Saturday to promote his latest Hallmark card.  We can only imagine the frenzy of all the lady dogs who came out to catch a glimpse of him, and maybe even to garner a photo op!   Via the Charlottesville Examiner:

Kay Taylor, Lincoln’s mom, was on hand for the Saturday event, as well as some of Lincoln’s most ardent admirers. “It’s so exciting to see the cards doing so well and generating so much interest,” Taylor said. “And everyone at each of the local Hallmark stores has been so nice about getting Lincoln's card in and supporting our efforts to promote the cards,” she added.  Read more at the Charlottesville Examiner.

4th of July Wiener Roaster

Oh boy, we'd don't know what we want more - some kisses from our pal 'Honey,' or a taste of what she was roasting on the grill!  Either way, we know it's bound to be delicious.

As an aside, we heard through the grapevine that Honey was quite ill over the holiday weekend - had to make a run to the Emergency Vet because she wasn't eating.  Tests are inconclusive at this point, but she is eating again.  We hope you continue on your road to recovery Honey.

A Note From Joey and Maggie: Easter Sunday With Our Pals

"Everyone Sit.  Now, stay......."  No....stay....."  Hope everyone had a great Easter Sunday!  We had a fun time visiting our good friends.  It was Joey's DOCP shot day (OUCH!) that he gets every 28 days, and our friends' Mom thankfully sees that it gets executed properly.  Joey and Maggie wore their Easter best - Joey in a bright red bow tie, and Maggie in her pearl necklace - yep, they're real.  All three of our friends are agility dogs, so it's fun to go to their house - they get treats for every good thing they do all day long.  They live in the house of never-ending treats!    Here we are waiting for our blueberry dessert that the Easter Bunny promised us.  And we didn't even have to do anything to get it but look cute.  Joy.

Congratulations to the International Kennel Club of Chicago, who held their 150th show last weekend at Chicago's McCormick Place Complex.  Over 10,000 dogs were in attendance over several days.  Always a great time.  Here are some Dachshund-centric (Dachcentric?) photos by Joey and Maggie.

Ahoy there me scurvy dogs!  It be a holiday fit fer th' seven seas and if ye landlubbers are not  knowin' what we be speakin' of, then ye've not been properly interduced te Talk Like a Pirate Day!  This be th' holiday te be celebrated on th' nineteenth o' September and in honor of such a fine day we bring ye these tokens of our love.  Above, lass 'Honey' will be AAAARRRRrffffin all tide in her swashbuckler outift, an' below she be joined by laddie `Teddy` on th' poop deck!   Aye, much thanks to Doxieone for th' photos!

And if gamin' be yer thing, be sure an' check ou' th' new pirate video game which came out ealier this year: Jolly Rover.
It stars a Dachshund named Gaius James Rover, an "anthropomorphized foppish pup" wi' a taste fer tea. James tookst a wrong tack somewhere in th' ocean o' life an' ended up as an ineffective, overly polite pirate instead o' th' world-renowned circus clown he be destined te be. James’ sweet naïveté isn’t a very good fit fer th' life o' a pirate an' lands th' lad's in a variety o' scrapes throughout th' course o' th' game.
