Fond Remembrances: Itty Bitty Paintings for Joey and Maggie

'Joey' and 'Maggie' on canvas in front of Frankenmuth Dachshund

Continuing on with yesterday's theme of being taken back by the kindness of people, one day last April we got a package in the mail from our good pals 'Turbo' and 'Lily,' two long dogs who work closely with and volunteer a lot of their time for MidWest Dachshund Rescue.  We had no idea a package was coming from them, and when we opened it, we were absolutely shocked at the beauty inside:  itty bitty paintings of your 'Long and Short of it All' hosts 'Joey' and 'Maggie,' complete with itty bitty easels to display them on.  Apparently Turbo and Lily had a relative (we apologize that we can't read the artist's name on the back), paint several small paintings to be sold at MWDR's big "Cross Town Bark Around" Fundraiser in May.  In the process, two special paintings were created for Joey and Maggie, and they are just beautiful.  Joey's is great, and Maggie's is just awesome - the artist really captured Maggie's "look" - that wonderful "glare" that she gave Dad when she was tired of getting her photo taken, or any time her dinner was a few minutes late.  Again, these will be something we will treasure for the rest of our lives.  Thank you so much Turbo and Lily!

Fond Remembrances: The Wiener Wagon for Maggie and Joey

Sometimes we're a bit taken back by the kindness of people.  Take for example this awesome "Wiener Wagon."  We got a note in January from a reader of the blog, Grace Liesa, who asked us for our address and said she had something special to send us.  And boy, did she!  It was Maggie and Joey's very own Wiener Wagon!   Grace hand-crafted and sent this to us solely out of the kindness of her heart, in honor of Joey making it through his surgery last year, and Maggie and Joey's birthday, which was last December 23rd.  We tried to get photos of Maggie and Joey beside it to post on the blog, but we could never get a good photo of both of them that also detailed this wonderful sculpture.  As time moves along so quickly, we never got the chance to post it to the blog, even after several more photo session attempts with Maggie and Joey.
We would like to rectify that situation, as something so special, especially after Maggie's passing, must be shared with everyone.  It means more now than it ever did, and will be something we will treasure for the rest of our lives.  Thank you so much Grace.
Grace noted to us:  I know you all had a rough one in 2010 (I realize that was an understatement), so I hope this cheery sculpture will bring smile to your face. May Joey and Maggie have a much smoother ride in their Wiener Wagon in 2011.  Take care, and send our doxie kisses to Joey and Maggie, and tell them although we've never met in person, we surely love them in our hearts, and think loving thoughts of them all the time. That was how this special sculpture was created.

141 Dachshunds

We're sure that you remember Dachshund U.N., a travelling performance and architectural installation by Bennett Miller in 2010, which made its way around Australia and featured a U.N. replica with Dachshunds as delegates!   The project was also made into a 12-minute short film by director Sambodhi Field, which is now making the rounds at some film festivals.  Keep up with the film on facebook.
Here's a short trailer.
We covered the project extensively in the archives, but the search function isn't working too well at the moment.  Best bet is to click here for an Australia search and weed through the posts if you're so inclined.

Christmas in July with Martha Stewart: Make Your Own Sock Dachshund!

There's one thing we know for sure after the years of putting together The Long and Short of it All, and that's that Dachshund Lovers (and often the Dachshunds themselves) sure are crafty!  So crafty in fact....did you hear the one about the Dachshund Lover and the Policeman?
A Dachshund Lover is knitting as she drives on her way to a Dachshund festival.  There are three long dogs in the back seat, slightly nervous, as more attention is being paid to the knitting in hand than to the road ahead.  Pretty soon, her speed has crept all the way up to 95 mph--and she passes a parked police car. The car gives chase.  The three Dachshunds have a look of fear on their little faces. Officer Friendly turns on his siren, but the crafty Dachshund Lover, oblivious, doesn't even notice him. Finally, he pulls up alongside her car and yells, "Pull over! PULL OVER!"
She looks at him, looks at her knitting, and yells-- "NO! It's a CARDIGAN!"

Oh, Lordy, we're in stitches.  Anyway, thanks to Tassie Hare for writing in with the link to the Sock Dachshund!  She writes:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

This is a link to a "Christmas In July" project from Martha Stewart.
Martha doesn't SAY it is a doxie.... but, we doxielovers know when we see a doxie!!!
I can't wait to make one!!

Check it out at Martha Stewart.  It's a GOOD thing.

Dachshund Beautiful

As we perused the pages of the July/August House Beautiful magazine, we were excited to find that it's the Dachshund details that make a house a beautiful home.  In her 1929 bungalow in Brentwood, California, designer and Dachshund Lover Chris Barrett brings airy sophistication to Spanish Colonial architecture.  Above, floor-to-ceiling bookcases give depth to the dining room-office-library; artfully arranged objects on the shelves engage the eye.  A Danish Baroque desk doubles as a dining table and a hangout for Dachshund 'Frankie.'

Eden climbing roses soften the terra-cotta front porch as a vintage iron Dachshund foot scraper welcomes visitors.

In a sunlit end of the living room, a rosewood Tansu chest with gold paper-covered sliders is a visual anchor - and provides a touch of glamour to display a striking Dachshund print.

And finally, an Ikea flokati on the 1950s lounger by the living room fireplace is a plush perch for 'Bob.'

The Dachshund House - Berkeley, California

We're sure some of our readers feel the same way, but as Dachshund chachki collectors, sometimes we look around the house and wonder "Geez, do I really need all this Dachshund stuff?  Are we a wee bit crazy for adding another Dachshund figurine to the collection?  Do we really need these Dachshund towels for the kitchen?  These Dachshund flannel sheets are sure warm, but...really?"
As part of our therapy for Doxiemania, it helps to look at the collections or displays of other Dachshund Lovers - "Wow - you've got over 1,000 Dachshund figurines!  No one will doubt you're a Dachshund Lover, your car looks great with 50 Wiener Dog stickers on it."  Puts things back into perspective for us at least, when we come to the realization that there are different levels of Doxiemania - maybe we're not so crazy after all.  But we always remind ourselves that there is a thin line between Doxie Pride and Doxiemania.
Enter The Dachshund House.  Dog Milk just posted several photos of what they term The Dachshund House, which can be found in Berkeley, California, right over the Oakland/Berkeley border.  They note:  It’s truly a visual treat for all those who have the fortune to pass by.
Some might think that the house is a bit over-done, but what is that point of going over the top?  It's neat and clean, and we're sure the Artful Dachshunds brighten up the neighborhood.  We're giving this house 4 paws up - every neighborhood should be so lucky to have one.  But that's just us.  Maybe the Poodle People across the street don't have the same view.
Check out all the photos at Dog Milk.  You'll feel better.  Honest.
Thanks to our friend Alison for sending in the link!

Collector's Corner: A Vintage Bronze Dachshund Beauty

This handsome vintage piece - a smooth bronze Dachshund figurine mounted on a black marble base recently sold at auction for $455.  Dating to the early 1900's, it measures roughly 5 inches tall.  Excellent.

Buy Dachshund Art and Support the Tsunami Relief Effort

If you're looking for a little something to brighten up your space, you can't go wrong with these Dachshund and Bunny Linocut Block Prints being offered up by our pal 'Baxter' at his mom's kalyxcraftopia etsy shop. The artwork is titled "tomodachi", Japanese for friends, and will only be made in this color combination (white ink with red ballie, reminiscent of the flag of Japan) for the tsunami relief effort.  Whether you keep it for yourself, or give it as an Easter or Mother's Day gift, $5 of each print purchased will be donated to the Red Cross.  Awesome!  While there are just 4 prints left in the etsy shop at the moment, more will be added soon, or contact Baxter's mom.

Those Special Dachshunds On Canvas: Meet Winnie!

Wow - what a beautiful painting of a beautiful little gal!  Thanks so much to 'Winnie' for sending it in!  She writes:

Dear Maggie and Joey,

Wanted to share with you this great picture my human Mom had made of me.  I am a rescue from Pennsylvania.  My name is Winnie, I am 6 years old.  When Mom picked me up I was 4 lbs.  I am a whopping 5lbs right now so I be small my whole life.  I have a wonderful life now.  I am not too crazy about other dogs, other than my boy cousin Benny-Bob who lives with us now also.
Mom wanted to share this great picture in case others wanted their dogs done also. Just e-mail her at sue.scott@rhomecare.com, and she will hook them up with the artist.  Her name is Margaret Williams-McGowan - she is famous for painting dogs.

See you later, oh by the way we are really glad that Joey is better.

Love,
Winnie

Dachshund U.N. - November 13 at Perth PICA

Dachshund U.N., a performance and art installation, continues its rounds around Australia, seen most recently here in Perth.  This is a nice video which recaps the day's events by youtuber tokenskepticpodcast who notes:
A gathering of minds like no other! This is a short film I made of all the fine furry delegates from Perth, who came to the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in order to take part in Perth artist Bennett Miller's 'Dachshund U.N'.  Dachshund U.N is both a large-scale architectural installation and a participatory performance work that examines the role of the United Nations as a risk management organisation. Bennett transformed the Perth Cultural Centre Amphitheatre into a replica of the former U.N office in Geneva, Switzerland. The structure played host over two Saturdays in November, with all the delegates played by local live dachshunds!

Bump

Whimiscal, stylish, sophisticated...these are some of the words to describe Colorado-based sculptor Laurel Peterson Gregory's work.  Bump, seen here, is one of many limited edition Dachshund bronzes available at the artist's website.

ARCHITECTURAL DACHSHUND

Lucky Dog

While perusing through the pages of the November, 2010 issue of Architectural Digest, we spotted distinguished red smooth piebald 'Tommy' sharing an inside view of his newly expanded guest lodge at Mesa Vista Ranch in Texas, USA.  Tommy's humans are oil legend T. Boone Pickens, and his wife Madeleine.  With an estimated current net worth of about $1.4 billion, Mr. Pickens is ranked by Forbes as the 290th-richest person in America.  That's a lot of kibble.

(click photo to enlarge)

Designer John Cottrell decorated the Pickens' lodge.  Albert Bierstadt's Landscape with Lake hangs over the 17th-century French fireplace in the new dining room.  And wait....., what's that centerpiece on the mantel?

That's what we thought - a fine bronze Dachshund sculpture - good taste, indeed.
Pick up the November issue of Architectural Digest (with Rob Lowe on the cover) to see more of the Pickens' guest lodge.

I Heart Sausage Dogs

Our Kansas City pal 'Dash' writes (way back in the middle of August - we're so behind!) with this great little image:

Dear Joey and Maggie,

I hope all is well in Chicago. It is brutally hot here in KC, so everyone is staying inside (or in a pool!) as much as possible. I came across this today as I was looking for some prints for my house. I may not be able to pass this one up . . .

I hope Joey is feeling better!

Take care,
Dash
