Country Piebald

While perusing the pages of the new November, 2011 issue of Country Living, your Long and Short of it All host Joey let out a couple of big woofs when he turned to page 101 to discover a beautiful Piebald Dachshund named 'Dot' gracing the pages.  "Woof Woof!"  said Joey.  That means "Dot's Hot!"  Above, Dot lingers below a Pottery Barn clock in the family's mudroom.

Here, Dot lounges on an estate-sale bench covered with oilcloth.  "I'd like to snuggle up next to her," Joey was heard to exclaim.  See more of Dot's Mission Hill, Kansas 1930's Colonial Home in the November issue of Country Living.

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Jennifer Aniston

Okay, so Jennifer Aniston isn't a Dachshund Lover in the sense that she has her own Dachshund dog, but she obviously loves this little red smooth pup.  And who wouldn't?  Via INF Daily:  Imagine this: you’re out for a morning stroll, walking your super cute baby Dachshund. Everything’s normal, sorta quiet, then all of a sudden there’s Jennifer Aniston, and she’s petting your pup. And taking his picture with her iPhone. Bam! Your day just got 90% more interesting than everyone else’s.

Can't argue that.

"Woman Punching Black Bear" Story Goes Viral

The "Woman Punches Bear To Save Dog" story has gone viral - with news agencies all over the world reporting the tale.  Dachshund Lover Brooke Collins, of Juneau, Alaska, has received offers for interviews, appearances, and even a visit to The Late Show With David Letterman.  Excerpt from the Juneau Empire:

Brooke Collins of Juneau made headlines this week after she punched a black bear in her yard to save her dachshund Fudge from the bear’s grip.
Collins’ name has been on newspapers and websites. ABC, MSNBC, Fox News, Huffington Post and NPR are just a few examples. Radio stations from Anchorage, Seattle, Chicago and others have been asking to interview her. Even large metro papers like the Miami Herald and The Washington Post have picked this up.
Besides news sites, several dog-themed websites have been on the story as well.
The next stop could be national television. CBS has contacted Collins about bringing her to New York with Fudge and her boyfriend, Regan O’Toole, who was at the house when the incident took place.
In fact, the network is interested in this story with more than its news shows. “The Late Show with David Letterman” has also contacted Collins. She’s returned the inquiry and is awaiting a response.

We certainly hope she brings her handsome boy 'Fudge' with her!  Read more at the Juneau Empire.

Adele Gives Us a Shout Out in Vancouver?

British jazz-blues singer Adele entertains a sold-out audience at the Orpheum Theatre on Tuesday.

Thanks so much to Elizabeth Rosalyn for leaving a comment:  So... Adele just gave a huge shoutout to your blog at her Vancouver concert tonight. :)

Wow - we're so honored - boy do we love Adele.  She's the hottest Dachshundist around - selling over 8 million copies of her latest album?

We're not sure what she said, but The Vancouver Sun notes:

Adele would spend plenty of time chatting up her crowd between songs - talking about her wiener dog, her blog, fans she had met at the airport earlier that day and other lighthearted matters - and having quite a laugh throughout.

If anyone has any more info, please leave a comment!

Read more about Adele and her Dachshund 'Louie' in the archives, check out her official site, and buy her music.  You won't be sorry.  Seriously.

Time Together by Michael Franks: Don't Miss This Song and Video

Who?  Michael Franks is an American smooth jazz singer and songwriter. He has recorded with a variety of well-known artists, such as Patti Austin, Brenda Russell, Art Garfunkel, and David Sanborn. His songs have been recorded by The Manhattan Transfer, Patti Labelle, Carmen McRae, Diana Krall, Shirley Bassey and The Carpenters.  And oh yeah, he's a Dachshund Lover.
We were excited to get a note from Michael's wife, Claudia, announcing Michael's new song Time Together, a piece he wrote about his beloved Dachshund 'Flora,' and the title track off his new album.  Claudia writes:

dear joey and maggie...

we just found your blog and LOVE it!
i thought you might like to see the video that the record company put together for my husband's new cd, "time together".
the title song is for our dachshund flora who passed a year ago.  in every interview he does-people ask about flora and dachshunds.
we rescued her in 1998.  more info on flora is available on my husband's website...michaelfranks.com.  if you click on "flora's page" it has another slide show that we made...and a short little bit on our love story!  she was from a puppy mill in kansas.  we have since rescued 2 more with HUA...certified doxieholics!

He dedicates it to all of you who have lost a much loved companion. Michael is donating the royalties from this song to Hearts United for Animals in Flora's memory.  Produced by Gil Goldstein. Featuring Gil Goldstein and Romero Lubambo.  Video production by Peter Nevill.

"Celebrity" Dachshund Watch: Snookie vs Nellie!

We first posted photos of everyone's favorite guidette Snookie with a Dachshund puppy a few weeks ago, and our readers, like us, weren't too thrilled thinking that the train wreck known as Snookie could actually properly care for a little furry one - much less a Dachshund.  Stop, take a deep breath, and relax, because the Dachshund in question, 'Nellie,' is owned by a shop keeper in Italy where the new season of Jersey Shore is being filmed.  Shew!  Excerpt from Teddy Hilton:

Snooki's Newest Feud!

We thought the cast of The Jersey Shore was getting along so well with their Italian friends.
But it appears that Nelly, the shop keeper's wiener dog who hangs near where the guidos "work," has started drama with the Shores' smallest cast member.
The dog stole Snooki's Pinocchio doll from inside the O' Vesuvio Pizzeria and chewed it and ran around with it before giving the nose a nibble - and Snooks look purdy pissed!
We hope there is a whole episode dedicated to this in the upcoming season.

We do too.

Gotta admit, this is too cute.

See lots of photos over at Teddy Hilton.

Doggie Diner Set For Demolition

Thanks so much to our pal 'Franny' over at the always engaging Doxiementary for sending in the link with the sad news.  She writes:

Hi Maggie & Joey!

Hope all is well! I thought I would share some news about the Doggie Diner (with the famous Dachshund head) in San Francisco.  Via the SFGate:

The former site of a Doggie Diner outpost is set for demolition. The local classic out in the Sunset has been defunct for years, and the grinning dachshund moved down the block as an official landmark in 2005, but the building has remained.
Now, it looks like its days are numbered, as Ocean Beach Bulletin brings word that the one-story building at 2710 Sloat Boulevard (between 45th and 46th) is set to be demolished.
Most recently, it housed the Carousel Diner, but it’s been vacant for a while. Now the plan is to convert it into an “additional outdoor sales area for the Sloat Garden Center.”
City Planner Thomas Wang says that if no one files a discretionary review (complaint) by July 8, then he can sign off on the demo and pass the application onto the next city department. Tell it goodbye.

And so goes another piece of Dachshund History.  At least they saved the Dachshund Head.

Vinnie Jones, the Clairvoyant Dachshund

Does your Dachshund have psychic powers?  Can he see and hear things you can't - like ghosts running through the walls of your home?  Apparently black and tan smooth 'Vinnie Jones' can, and his humans took him to a ghost expert to confirm in a new series which aired in the UK last night called A Different Breed.
Unfortunately this video is just a snippet of the show, but if you UKers subscribe to Sky TV, you can watch the whole episode on Sky's website.

Dachshund Lover Joan Crawford on Dachshund Lover Elizabeth Taylor

Not the cat fight we were half expecting, but lots of respect. She only talks about her for about 45 seconds - we were hoping she would comment on her good taste in canines.

Dachshund Lover Elizabeth Taylor Passes

We're so sad to report the passing of Dachshund Lover Elizabeth Taylor, who died today at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Hospital. She was a legend of the likes we will never see again.
Her son Michael Wilding stated:  "My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love," he said. "Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world. Her remarkable body of work in film, her ongoing success as a businesswoman, and her brave and relentless advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS, all make us all incredibly proud of what she accomplished. We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts."  Source.

Brooke Astor's Beloved Dachshunds Won't Use The Doggy Door

The late Brooke Astor's Dachshunds, 'Girlsie' (left) and 'Boysie,' eat a gourmet meal at the Iris Love residence in Lincoln, Vermont, 2009

Archaeologist and Dachshundist Iris Love was dining with friends including Liz Smith and Helen Gurly Brown on Monday night when the subject of 'Girlsie' and 'Boysie' came up, the Dachshunds who belonged to the late Brooke Astor, and who are in the care of Iris Love.  NYMag reports:

So how aaaare the Astor dachshunds — Boysie and Girlie — these days? Apparently they take after their original owner. "I was with Girlie [should that be Girlsie?] over the weekend," Love said. "She's DIVINE. The only thing is, although I have dog doors all over, Girlie will not go out a dog door. She sits in front of any door and barks for someone to open the door for her, and then she goes outside and plays and does what she wants to." Wait, an Astor wants someone to do things for her?! "She comes back and barks again, because the door has to be opened," Love continued. "I said to someone who didn't believe this, 'The only thing that Girlie would prefer more is that the person who opens the door wears white gloves!'"

Celebrity Dachshund Watch: Kelsey Grammer

Woof Woof Woof!  We had no idea 5-time Emmy Award-winning American actor and comedian Kelsey Grammer was a Dachshund Lover!   The star who worked himself into our hearts playing Frasier Crane has been in the news as of late, with a bitter divorce from wife Camille, and recent wedding to Kayte Walsh.  This marriage will surely last - with a Dachshund involved, right?  Here's the scoop on this photo from The Daily Mail, where Kelsey and his new wife check out a New York apartment:

They celebrated their marriage with a lavish wedding reception at New York City's Plaza Hotel last month.
And now newlyweds Kelsey Grammer and Kayte Walsh are apparently looking to set up home there.
Kelsey, 56 and Kayte, 29 were spotted walking into the Plaza yesterday, where they are said to be viewing one of the apartments.
As well as being a high end hotel, the famed Plaza also offer private residences for sale.
They start at approximately $2 million for a one bedroom residence to duplex and triplex penthouses starting at $15 million.
The couple took along Kelsey's five-year-old son, Jude, from his marriage to Camille Grammer, and their dachshund dog.

Smiles!  A photo from last fall details this cute red smooth pup in one of our awkward growing stages!  If anyone knows the pups' name, or has any more info, by all means leave a comment!
